The cast, which includes Braff (Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian), Faison (Dr. Christopher Turk), Chalke (Dr. Elliot Reid), Reyes (Carla Espinosa, RN), and McGinley (Dr. Perry Cox), sat down with Rotten Tomatoes Editor Jacqueline Coley to reflect on coming back together years after the series finale and what it means to step back into Sacred Heart.
In the conversation, the group shares how slipping back into their iconic roles felt both nostalgic and surprisingly effortless. They tease which familiar faces might return, discuss how the revival balances heartfelt storytelling with the show’s signature absurdist humor, and, of course, can’t resist endlessly quoting some of their favorite Scrubs moments. The result is a lively, laugh-filled reunion that proves the chemistry, and the heart, of Scrubs is very much intact.
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Why this revival now? I do think it’s a great time for medical shows. Noah’s back, you’re back, Grey’s Anatomy never left…why right now?
Bill Lawrence: All right, I got two answers: on a personal level, not everybody is making stuff right now. And if people are silly enough to let you tell stories with people that you would want to spend time with anyway, and you don’t do it, I think you’d be crazy. Yeah, I think one of the reasons this show works is that the relationships seem authentic and it’s because we all still love each other and get to see each other and hang out with each other anyway. And so I don’t think there’s any real burden other than trying as hard as we can and trying to capture that community that made us all so connected in the first place. And from a storytelling reason, the world’s in disarray and I’m writing a lot of stories personally because I need to, that have some hope and optimism in them. And one of the things that always struck me about this show, especially all these people around me and how they portrayed it, was the undercurrent of humanity and how much it meant to me to see people that were doing what they were doing because ultimately they wanted to be of service and taking care of others. So, it’s really easy just to take The Pitt scripts and add jokes to them.
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: You wrote so many great lines, what’s the one [quote] fans always come up to you with?
Donald Faison: I had somebody jump on my back in London and yell “EAGLE” and I ran for my life.
Scrubs: Season 1 premieres on ABC February 25!
