The Fallout video game franchise has been one of the most popular over the past couple of decades, with 2008’s Fallout 3 in particular earning widespread critical acclaim. And with the recent success of other video game adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Last of Us, as well as the participation of Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, expectations were high for Prime Video’s live-action Fallout series. Thankfully, critics and audiences alike have embraced the show, making it one of the best-reviewed game adaptations ever.
Prime Video clearly knew they had a winner on their hands, as they surprised everyone by releasing the entire first season a day early on April 10. Ahead of the premiere, though, RT correspondent Perri Nemiroff sat down with stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, as well as Nolan and series creator Graham Wagner, to talk about Fallout. They discussed how they strove to stay true to the games, shared what Easter eggs to look out for, and explained what they thought were there characters’ greatest strenghs and weaknesses.
Perri Nemiroff for Rotten Tomatoes: If you had to be a vault-dweller, I want to know what your greatest asset is, how you’d contribute to the community, but then I also want to know your greatest weakness, the thing that would just make you a plain old stinky member of the vault.
Aaron Moten: What would make you a good member of the vault? You, Ella?
Ella Purnell: Well, so many things.
Moten: Can I say… Actually, I think it might be easier to compliment the other person. Ella is an advocate for everyone else, and that’s the way she is on a set. It’s one of the most beautiful things about her. But she takes care of everyone, and she really wants to be an advocate for other people, so she would be a great leader of the vault.
Purnell: This is the nicest thing he’s ever said to me, to or about me.
Moten: I don’t say a lot of nice things to her.
Purnell: I had to work hard for that compliment. That’s very sweet, thank you.
