Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man might hold a 52% on the Tomatometer and a 57% on the Popcornmeter but critics and audiences are still over the moon about Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott’s performances in the Blumhouse horror remake. Critics say Garner was “powerful,” and audiences are praising Abbott’s performance as “phenomenal.” The cast and filmmakers recently sat down with RT’s Jacqueline Coley to discuss the film, including working with prosthetics, scenes they thought were the scariest, and Garner’s epic performance.
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Let’s get to your actors. I love the compliment you paid Julia [Garner] about calling her a Shelly Duvall character in this one. By the way, she completely rejects what you said because she’s too humble of a person to admit it, but we’ve all seen what Julia Garner can do. Leigh Whannell: She has those eyes like Shelley Duvall. She has these eyes that are like empathy machines, like she doesn’t have to say a word. I would cut a lot of dialogue with her on set because I realized… I don’t know if you remember that one scene in the film when Chris Abbott’s character picks up the daughter and puts her on the couch, and we cut to a closeup of Julia just watching — she originally had dialogue, and I was like, ‘We don’t need it’ because, you know, we don’t need her to say, ‘Do you need me to help?’ You see it all in her face.
