It’s been almost two long years, hip-hopera fans, but R. Kelly is finally back with more rhythmic, closet-bound insanity. The next ten chapters of the (allegedly) diuretic-plagued singer’s magnum opus, “Trapped in the Closet,” made their debut the other night at the IFC Center theater in New York — and fortunately for all of us, Entertainment Weekly was there.
It was a formal premiere, complete with paparazzi, red carpet, spotlights, and the man himself. Before the movie started, Reginald Sylvester Kelly held forth, comparing himself to the inventors of the airplane and offering the quote of the evening — “I’d like to welcome me here” — before giving the audience a glimpse of how he built his “Closet.” From the article:
“If I don’t rhyme, I can’t tell the story. So it’s crazy, if you understand what I’m saying. Like ‘Bridget’ and ‘midget’? I came up with that at Panera Bread — real talk. And I had spent a whole week on trying to figure out how the hell — I mean, I got ‘midget,’ but how can I continue telling the story? But once I came up with, he had a girl named Bridget, I was able to continue on with my story. And that’s how ‘Trapped in the Closet’ goes.”
Fortunately, for those of us unable to make it to New York for the premiere, IFC.com is unveiling new chapters on a daily basis. Click through to the second link below to see more!
