The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards were announced Monday morning, and the clown prince of crime is now the clown prince of the Oscars, with Joker the most nominated film for 2020. Todd Phillips’ audacious comic-book-villain film, the only not-Certified Fresh movie among the nine Best Picture nominees, was nominated for 11 awards, including Best Picture, Directing, Actor In a Leading Role, and Adapted Screenplay. After Joker, fellow Best Picture contenders The Irishman, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and 1917 landed 10 nominations each, while Marriage Story, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, and Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite earned six nominations each.
There were some pretty major shocks among the announcements, with the Academy showing once again its propensity to favor long-honored vets over newcomers or more surprising work (Anthony Hopkins and Kathy Bates earned surprise nods as Awkwafina, Lupita Nyong’o, Taron Egerton, and Jennifer Lopez were snubbed). And Adam Sandler’s fairy tale run with Uncut Gems, which many expected would earn him his first-ever Oscar nomination, came to a disappointing end for the Sandman. Also noted during the nominations announcement was the lack of female directing nominees, with co-announcer Issa Rae congratulating “those men” after reading the category’s names during the live broadcast. You can see a full list of the biggest snubs and surprises of the nominations here.
