On DVD This Week: Hell or High Water, Kubo and the Two Strings, and More

We’ve got an interesting mix of stuff available on home video this week, from a pair of highly acclaimed movies and a well-received drama series to a mediocre boxing flick and an action sequel, plus a couple more releases from the Criterion Collection. Read on for the full list.


Poldark: Season 2 (2016) --

Based on the eponymous series of novels by Winston Graham, this BBC period drama follows a late 18th century British soldier who returns home to find his family’s estate in ruins and attempts to rebuild his life. Information on special features is currently unavailable.

Hell or High Water (2016) 97%

Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Jeff Bridges star in this crime drama about a pair of brothers who resort to robbing banks when one of them learns they’re about to lose their family land. Special features include inside looks at the filming locations and characters in the film, footage from the premiere, and a half-hour Q&A with Pine and Bridges from a Los Angeles screening.

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) 97%

Another stop motion animated triumph from Laika, this fantastical tale follows a young boy in Japan who accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from his past and sets out to save his family. Bonus features include a six-part look at the making of the film and brief looks at the film’s themes and locations, and a commentary track.

War Dogs (2016) 62%

Miles Teller and Jonah Hill star in Todd Phillips’ dark comedy about a couple of enterprising young bros who exploit a loophole in a government initiative to become international arms dealers. Extras include a trio of making-of featurettes.

Hands of Stone (2016) 45%

Edgar Ramirez and Robert De Niro star in this sports biopic about Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran and his legendary fights with Sugar Ray Leonard. No information on special features is currently available.

Mechanic: Resurrection (2016) 31%

Jason Statham reprises his role as a deadly assassin trying to leave his violent life behind who is pulled back into action by a duplicitous woman (Jessica Alba). Bonus features include a making-of featurette, a look at the film’s score, and brief looks at the prison location, co-star Michelle Yeoh, and Statham’s stunt work.

One-Eyed Jacks (1961) 61%

– Criterion Collection

The first of two Criterion releases this week, this sole directorial effort from Marlon Brando stars Brando as an old west bank robber who is betrayed by his partner (Karl Malden) and sets out for revenge. The Blu-ray comes with a new introduction by Martin Scorsese, excerpts of voice recordings that Brando made during production, and new video essays on the film’s production and history.

The Squid and the Whale (2005) 92%

Lastly, we have Noah Baumbach’s dysfunctional family dramedy about a feuding married couple (played by Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney) whose impending divorce takes its toll on their two sons. Extras include new interviews with Baumbach and the primary cast, a new conversation between Baumbach and the film’s composers, a 2005 making-of doc, audition footage, and more.
