New on Netflix in August 2021

Summer Netflix viewing includes John David Washington and Alicia Vikander in thriller Beckett, Jason Momoa and Isabela Merced in action film Sweet Girl, and Sandra Oh and Jay Duplass in new drama series The Chair.

August finds us in the thick of the summer threatened with another wave of pandemic lockdowns for the unvaccinated.

(Please get your shots so that A. you don’t die and B. we can together enjoy what’s left of 2021’s beach-going, vacation-enjoying, backyard-barbecue-and-margaritas-with-friends weather.)

So for now it looks like we’ll see another month of Netflix and chilling in the air conditioning of your home or apartment with your pandemic buddies — be they of the flesh or furball variety.

Fortunately, the streaming giant has us covered with new films and series to watch throughout the month, including uplifting family fare Vivo, featuring the songs of Lin-Manuel Miranda, on August 6. Paris Hilton resurfaces in a new reality show Cooking With Paris on August 4. From the creative teams behind Fauda and The Killing, August 6 series Hit & Run follows a husband and father (Lior Raz) who uncovers a mystery while investigating his wife’s death. John David Washington is an American tourist embroiled in a political conspiracy in August 13 film Beckett.

HIGHLIGHTS

Description: Vivo is an animated musical adventure featuring all-new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Tony, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of Hamilton and In the Heights. Vivo follows a one-of-kind kinkajou (aka a rainforest “honey bear,” voiced by Miranda), who spends his days playing music to the crowds in a lively square with his beloved owner Andrés (Buena Vista Social Club’s Juan de Marcos). Though they may not speak the same language, Vivo and Andrés are the perfect duo through their common love of music. But when tragedy strikes shortly after Andrés receives a letter from the famous Marta Sandoval (three-time Grammy-winning Latin pop legend Gloria Estefan), inviting her old partner to her farewell concert with the hope of reconnecting, it’s up to Vivo to deliver a message that Andrés never could: A love letter to Marta, written long ago, in the form of a song. Yet in order to get to Marta, who lives a world apart, Vivo will need the help of Gabi (newcomer Ynairaly Simo) – an energetic tween who bounces to the beat of her own offbeat drum to fulfill his owner’s wishes.

The films start with Malice at the Palace, directed by Floyd Russ (Zion) and featuring never-before-seen footage. The famous Pacers-Pistons brawl is unraveled by those who lived it.

Premiere Date: August 10, 2021

Description: While vacationing in Greece, American tourist Beckett (John David Washington) becomes the target of a manhunt after a devastating accident. Forced to run for his life and desperate to get across the country to the American embassy to clear his name, tensions escalate as the authorities close in, political unrest mounts, and Beckett falls even deeper into a dangerous web of conspiracy.

Description: The Chair follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh) as she navigates her new role as the Chair of the English department at prestigious Pembroke University. Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of color at the university. From creators Amanda Peet (Dirty John) and Annie Wyman, the series also stars Jay Duplass as Professor Bill Dobson, Holland Taylor as Professor Joan Hambling, Bob Balaban as Professor Elliot Rentz, Nana Mensah as Professor Yaz McKay, David Morse as Dean Paul Larson, and Everly Carganilla as Ju-Hee “Ju Ju” Kim.

Description: Devoted family man Ray Cooper (Jason Momoa), vows justice against the pharmaceutical company responsible for pulling a potentially life saving drug from the market just before his wife (Adria Arjona) dies from cancer. But when his search for the truth leads to a deadly encounter that puts Ray and his daughter Rachel (Isabela Merced) in harm’s way, Ray’s mission turns into a quest for vengeance in order to protect the only family he has left. Sweet Girl is directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza and also stars Justin Bartha, Amy Brenneman, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Raza Jaffrey, Lex Scott Davis and Michael Raymond-James.
