Harvey Milk was a real life politician and gay-rights activist, who – in 1977 – became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA.

His ultimately tragic life has already been explored on film in the academy award-winning documentary feature The Times of Harvey Milk – but this film, which stars Sean Penn in the title role and is directed by Gus van Sant is the first fictional portrayal of this fascinating figure and is sure to be amongst the Oscar hopefuls.
