According to Jet Li’s official web site, jetli.com, Jet was so affected by his near-brush with death while in the Maldives during the tsunami, that he has decided to take action and start up a non-profit foundation called "ONE Foundation", aimed at developing capital and resources for future victims of natural disasters.
Jet states "the experience of surviving the chaos and witnessing the devastation caused by this natural disaster has changed me forever." "Deep in my heart, I sensed the urge to act-to do something more."
The foundation is based on the idea that if each person gave $1 each month, the resources generated through such action would be enough to assist those who suffer as the recent tsunami victims have.
The initial plans are to start the foundation in China and Hong Kong, Li’s homeland, and expand to other countries from there. According to Li, "My homeland represents one-fifth of the world’s population, and as such, bears a responsibility to take its place among the other leading nations in the world in setting an example."
