This week in TV news: Game of Thrones premiere date news! A peek at the musical crossover episode of Supergirl and The Flash with Glee alum Darren Criss; a big casting week with new roles for Jon Cryer, Laverne Cox, Patricia Clarkson, and more; a Will & Grace reunion; and Ewan McGregor transforms for Fargo.

Game of Thrones Season 7 Premiere Date Revealed, Teaser Poster and Sigils Teaser Video Released

Season 7 of HBO hit fantasy series Game of Thrones will premiere July 16. The cable network announced the date on Thursday in an interactive Facebook Live event that asked viewers to type “Fire” or “Dracarys” to unleash a blast that would melt a mini-wall of ice obscuring the date.

A teaser poster has also been released ahead of a big panel at SXSW in Austin on Sunday. The panel will include showrunners David Benioff  and D.B. Weiss and stars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams and is expected to provide a lot of news on the series.

Darren Criss Plays a Villain with — What Else? — an Angelic Voice in Supergirl/Flash Crossover

The teaser trailer for the new musical Supergirl/Flash crossover is here — check out Darren Criss as the DC Comics villain Music Meister, whose victims break out into song, in the March 21 episode.

USA’s Dig star Jason Isaacs will suit up as Captain Lorca in the upcoming CBS All-Access series Star Trek: Discovery. He joins James Frain, Anthony Rapp, Doug Jones, and Michelle Yeoh in the cast. [THR]

  • Alec Baldwin told Mario Lopez on Extra this week that we can’t expect a Trump impression in the Saturday Night Live cold open for too much longer. “Trump just overwhelmingly lacks any sportsmanship, he remains, bitter, and angry, and you just want to look at him and go, ‘You won!’” Baldwin said.   • Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) will play the title role in the ABC buddy comedy The Trustee, produced by Elizabeth Banks. [Deadline]
  • Marcc Rose (Straight Outta Compton) and newcomer Wavyy Jones have been tapped to play rappers Tupac and Biggie in the upcoming USA docudrama Unsolved, the network announced this week.
  • Coby Bell (The Game) will round out the cast of Fox’s Marvel pilot, directed by Bryan Singer.
  • Mega Game of Thrones fan and NY Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard is heading for a dream spot as an extra on the HBO show this season. [MLB]
  • Australian comedian Jim Jefferies is set to host a weekly late-night comedy show on Comedy Central. Jeffries rose to fame with two incendiary Netflix specials, his own FX series, Legit, and an epic brawl with Piers Morgan on Real Time with Bill Maher last year. [Deadline]
  • Cristela Alonzo joins Jason Ritter in ABC’s The Gospel Of Kevin pilot. [Deadline]
  • Good Wife alum Dallas Roberts will star alongside Debby Ryan in the CW pilot Insatiable, a drama about a southern lawyer and beauty pageant coach, based on the real-life story of Bill Alverson. [Deadline]
  • Former Nickelodeon iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove grows up in the new NBC comedy pilot Spaced Out. She’ll play an engineer working on sending a rocket to Mars. [Deadline]

  • The HBO adaptation of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn’s novel Sharp Objects will star Patricia Clarkson alongside Amy Adams. [THR]
  • Nestor Carbonell (Bates Motel) and Colm Feore (House of Cards) have been cast in the Fox reboot of Behind Enemy Lines. [THR]

The cast of NBC’s hit ’90s show Will & Grace reunited during a promo shoot for the show’s upcoming 10-episode revival. Eric McCormack (Will) shared a photo of the pals on his Twitter.


Deals & Development: Inaritu out at Starz, Gilmore Girls Reboot — Part 2? — and More

Greg Kinnear will star in the upcoming Alejandro Iñárritu series The One Percent. The show, however, doesn’t have a broadcast partner yet; Starz pulled out of the series earlier this week. [Deadline]

  • Will Rory and Logan make a go of it after all? Netflix head Ted Sarandos told the British Press Agency that Gilmore Girls, which had a four-episode revival late last year, could be making a second return to the streaming network. The revival was met with mixed reviews and some fans are feeling, well, done with the long-running series.
  • Turner and Warner Brothers announced this week they are partnering on an animation streaming service, Boomerang, that will feature the Hanna-Barbera, Looney Tunes, and MGM animation libraries of more than 5,000 titles. The service will include classics like Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, The Jetsons, and The Flintstones. Titles will be available on the web as well as iOS and Android apps for $4.99/month or $39.99 annually.
  • The live musicals will go on! Jerry Mitchell, who choreographed Hairspray for NBC last year, is returning to direct Bye Bye Birdie: Live, alongside the director of NBC’s upcoming World of Dance, Emmy winner Alex Rudzinski. Mitchell also directed the 2013 Best Musical winner Kinky Boots on Broadway. [Deadline]
  • Amazon is developing a new series about an all-female Texas rodeo from Transparent showrunner Jill Soloway. She will produce produce the limited series, which is set in 1942. The streaming network also greenlit an unscripted 24-hour car racing series titled Le Mans: Racing Is Everything. [Deadline, Deadline]
  • Hanna, the 2011 film about a teen who is a trained assassin, is being developed as a TV property by its co-writer David Farr (The Night Manager) for NBCUniversal International Studios. [Empire]
  • Two Dallas Buyers’ Club producers are working on an hour-long family drama series centered around the opiate epidemic in the U.S. for A&E. [Deadline]

Ewan McGregor Plays Brothers in Fargo Season 3

Ewan McGregor is almost unrecognizable in this teaser for Fargo Season 3, where he plays brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon.
