Leigh Whannell and James Wan are a winning duo, being responsible for one of the biggest horror franchises of the 2000s and one of the biggest franchises of the 2010s. Though Insidious may not have had the cultural footprint of Saw, it is nevertheless another hugely effective horror franchise that continues to grow and terrify audiences.
After following the Lambert family and their encounters with ghosts and demons from a forbidden realm known as “The Further” for five movies, it seems we are finally moving on to brand new characters who will be tormented by dark entities. It’s a brand new day for the Insidious franchise, and there’s plenty of reason to be excited.
With Halloween season fast approaching, it’s time to start preparing for all the spooky movies coming to theaters. Without further ado, here is everything we know about the upcoming Insidious: Out of the Further.
Who’s behind the new film?
Like many horror franchises, the Insidious series has allowed new voices to leave their mark on the genre, and Out of the Further is no exception. This time, the film will be directed by Jacob Chase, who previously directed the 2020 horror movie Come Play starring Gillian Jacobs and John Gallagher Jr. Before it, Chase made a name for himself with several short films in the horror genre.
Chase also wrote the screenplay based on a story he wrote with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman).
Leigh Whannell and James Wan return to produce the film.
Who’s in it?
We are following brand new characters in Insidious: Out of the Further, so that means a brand new cast of people to be scared out of their minds by demons and red doors.
The film will star Amelia Eve as Gemma, a young mother who discovers she can travel into the Further. Eve previously starred in Mike Flanagan’s fantastic The Haunting of Bly Manor alongside Victoria Pedretti. Also starring are Brandon Perea (Jordan Peele’s Nope), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Sam Spruell (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), and Laura Gordon (Late Night With the Devil).
Additionally, we know Lin Shaye will return to the franchise and reprise her role as Elise Rainier yet again. Elise, of course, is the main protagonist of the Insidious franchise, appearing in every film so far as a physicist and paranormal investigator who helps the Lambert family in their encounters with the Further. Even though she was killed at the end of the first film, Elise continues to appear as a spirit in the Further.
What’s the Story?
We don’t know with absolute certainty whether Out of the Further will connect with the Lambert family and the previous films in the franchise, but we do know the focus is on an entirely new character.
The official synopsis of the film confirms we’ll follow Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in her childhood home, where she discovers she can travel into the Further. Trouble finds her when an evil entity comes after her, and Gemma realizes she can bring back things from the Further into our world. That leads the demons to terrorize Gemma in order to get her to liberate them.
The original Insidious was a massive hit and launched a rather popular and successful horror movie series. Kicking things off in 2010, James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s Insidious had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to earn $100 million off a budget of just $1.5 million. The movie also served as inspiration for a maze at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights in three separate years.
The first sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2, was also directed by Wan from a script by Whannell and earned $162 million off of a $5 million budget in 2013. For the third film, Leigh Whannell (who made his directorial debut with this movie) took the story back in time as the first prequel in the franchise. Insidious: Chapter 3 earned $113 million back in 2015. For the fourth film, Insidious: The Last Key, Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan, Escape Room) took over directorial duties for a sequel to the third film, still a prequel to the very first film. The Last Key was released in 2018 and went on to gross $168 million. The most recent entry in the franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, was released in 2023. Patrick Wilson, who had starred in the first two movies, made his directorial debut with a proper sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2, following the now-grown child of the Lamberts. The Red Door became the highest-grossing movie in the franchise, earning $189 million.

Yes, there is! The first trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further is just what you’d expect from the franchise. There is just enough of the story to know there will be plenty of frights, and some appropriately moody and terrifying looks at the Further.
