Variety brings some news that, frankly, comes as no surprise whatsoever: Disney and Spyglass Entertainment will combine to deliver a live-action big-screen rendition of the classic "Underdog" cartoon. The 1964 cartoon, created by Buck Biggers & Chet Stover, has enjoyed kiddy popularity and cult resurgences over the years, and now it’s time for our favorite canine crime-fighter to hit the silver screens.
Producer Gary Barber sums it up pretty plainly: "Anything where you have a dog in that superhero context, that’s appealing on a global basis." The adapted screenplay by Joe Piscatella & Craig A. Williams tells of "a diminutive hound named Shoeshine gets superpowers after a lab accident. When he’s adopted by a 12-year-old boy, the two form a bond around the shared knowledge that Shoeshine is really Underdog."
Disney hopes to get the production underway early next year.
