Anne Hathaway Rewatched The Devil Wears Prada to Learn How to Pronounce ‘Cerulean’
Hathaway and co-star Stanley Tucci talk The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the influence of the first film.
One of the most iconic scenes in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada has ambitious writer-turned-personal assistant Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) dressed down by her prickly, no-nonsense new boss, fashion magazine chief Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), as she meticulously details the history behind Andy’s cerulean sweater. It’s a perfect snapshot of the initial dynamic between Andy, an aspiring journalist who thinks the fashion industry is superficial and beneath her, and Miranda, whose informed rebuttal puts Andy in her place and sets her on a path to understanding the world she’s now a part of. It’s easily one of the most memorable and frequently referenced moments in the film, but there was one part of it that never stuck with Hathaway.
“I realized today that I don’t actually know how to say the word ‘cerulean,'” she confessed during her Fandango Big Ticket interview. “So I looked it up by watching the scene.”

Hathaway reprises her role as Andy in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which opens in theaters on May 1. The new film finds Andy rejoining Miranda’s Runway as a features editor as the magazine faces financial troubles. In order to save the company, Miranda, Andy, and art director Nigel (Stanley Tucci) reach out to another former assistant, Emily (Emily Blunt), who now runs her own luxury fashion brand.
Tucci joined Hathaway for the Big Ticket interview with Fandango correspondent Zuri Hall, expressing joy about reuniting with the cast: “I never thought it was going to happen.” The pair reminisced about the first film, offered behind-the-scenes details about the new one, and talked about what has changed in the meantime.

In the trailer for the sequel, we see a moment when Miranda claims not to remember who Andy is, and Hathaway says it was a particularly difficult scene to film.
“We laughed so hard doing that scene that I did that thing where you start laughing and you can’t stop. And everybody’s waiting to go to lunch, and they can’t go to lunch until you stop laughing, and so, somehow, you can’t stop laughing.”
“What’s beautiful about Meryl’s performance,” Tucci added, “is that you’re not really sure if she does remember or doesn’t remember, so it’ll be up to the audience to decide for themselves.”
Audiences will no doubt be more than happy to do that when the film opens on May 1, and Anne Hathaway even has a suggestion for how fans can celebrate the occasion: “People should be crocheting cerulean wine cozies. Put a blue crochet sweater on your wine bottle that you put in your bag.”
