Renewed and Cancelled TV Shows 2016/2017

by | May 17, 2016 | Comments

As we come to the close of the major network upfronts, we see the renewals of some of our favorite series, but we also lament the departures of others. As is the norm this time of year, there are surprises and hopes that perhaps a cancelled show or two will be picked up by another network or streaming channel, but many will just be lost. Please note that we’re using the industry definition of “cancelled,” which means “not returning,” regardless of whether or not showrunners had a chance to finish the story (we also realize some series simply “ended”). See the list below and check the status of your beloved shows.

  • Melody F

Shame on you ABC for cancelling good shows like The Family yet renewing horrible shows like Mistresses!!

    • Mary rose roberts

Exactly they did the same thing with blood and oil last year I’m not watching anymore of their new shows

    • Kenny

I agree Melody. The Family was really great. This would be a great series for ‘Netflix’ to pick up…. That cliffhanger though!!

  • DoctorKillpatient

You should make a distinction between what got “cancelled” and what “ended” – “Downton Abbey” ended while crap like “Under the Dome” got canceled.

    • Catalyst

This. It’s very misleading to say Person of Interest and Banshee were “cancelled” when they were able to have final -albeit shorter- final seasons.

      • jimv1983

Person Of Interest did get cancelled. They just got enough notice to write an ending.

    • Cinemascribe

I’m glad someone else caught this. As much as I would have loved to hear the sweet words “American Idol has been cancelled” in my lifetime, that was another one which went into the last season knowing it was the final go round.

And I think it sucks Bordertown got scrapped, That show was really growing on me.

    • lore11

Mr. Selfridge also “ended”. Too bad Hollywood’s Jews can’t make movies like “Downton” and “Mr. Selfridge”. THEY make TRASH like Black-ish, Cougar, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly, Seinfeld — TRASH they run EVERY EFFING NIGHT! They cast Neil Patrick Harris and Ted Danson in every new show. GET RID OF THEM! Our TV stays OFF most of the time, even for news, due to their VIAGRA, CIALIS, DIABETES, and other BIG-PHARMA ads CONSUMING ALL THE AIR TIME. I REFUSE TO WATCH THEIR TRASH OR THEIR PHARMACY ADS.

And THEN there’s the Michael Strahan B.S. I don’t want to see the creep on ANY show…OR his femaie co-host.

      • Kenny

Just throw your tv in the trash and spare us your hate of anything that moves across your screen. Problem solved!

      • RobFromLoveland

Tell us what your REALLY think!

    • jimv1983

      Under The Dome was awesome.

  • GOATmaybe

    Steven Universe?

    • Alan D

That show is still going on right now

  • Shad Man

Person of Interest & Banshee cancelled ?? wow…

    • Catalyst

POI is ending with Season 5 which should be airing soon, if not already. Banshee got an 8 episode 4th and final season. Neither were “cancelled”.

      • Shad Man

but both shows have lots going on. they need at least 1-2 more seasons to finish it with a proper ending . The way things r now ..if they end it on the current ongoing season ..then it will seem rushed

        • Catalyst

POI is ending because they wanted to end on a high note. They have plenty of time to work things out. Most shows can use that final season to really cap things off rather than stretching the plot out. I mean Breaking Bad, for example, had one episode where everything finally came to a head, “Ozymandias” and it’s one of the greatest single episodes of television of all time. A season is definitely enough to tie up the important loose ends.

          • Shad Man

Yes ..but have you seen the season finale of Banshee ? If u haven’t then don’t look below
            *Spoiler Alert*
            .
            .
            .
After so much hype it was the butler who did it . ..The one guy who’s the most careful one , always being on alert on clean ups & his missions .. he kills the proctor’s niece in Proctor’s garden shed’s basement & leaves it with blood & Her recognizable chain. I did like how they tied up the other loose ends ..they did it quite well ..but this one really bothered me .
The way things r now with The machine going up against Decima’s Samaritan on POI . I hope they will end it more smoothly

  • Carlos the Dwarf

How is Longmire?…I keep forgetting to start it.
But obviously NetFlix picking it up sparks my interest even more.

    • Jennifer L Nedimyer

I enjoyed it, glad to see it’s being picked up!

    • Beverly Dancy

A great show. Very happy Netflix picked it up after A&E dropped it.

    • Scott Parker

It’s a good modern folksy western themed show.. I don’t usually go in for that type of stuff but this show really grabbed my attention…

it’s got a ton of heart, some great stories and characters (and actors).

  • Ben

This list has been published on other sources already. It would be nice considering this is Rotten Tomatoes if the most recent season RT score was also provided as part of the list. Maybe even the ability to sort the list by score, sort by network or sort by cancel/renewed status.

  • britain

Hellooooo morons at RT. A show ending isn’t the same as it being cancelled.

  • ecoSuzy

And what does it mean that a show is both cancelled and renewed (see The Player). I liked that show.

  • Teleri

PBS doesn’t ‘cancel’ those BBC shows, dolts. BBC, intelligently, doesn’t keep flogging dead horses. They tell a story then end it!

  • Steve Jones

I didn’t even know what half of these shows were. Wow there is a lot of crap out there thank god for Netflix and HBO.

  • Mary rose roberts

I’m so sick and tired of getting involved in new shows and then they canceled on ABC and NBC are terrible about that I just got involved in the family and they canceled it on ABC they did the same thing with blood and oil last year so I’m done

    • Niki Nechelle Washington

There is a petition on Change.org to bring back the family. Please sign. It’s only 5248 more supporters needed

    • jimv1983

Fox is even worse about that. The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Terra Nova are big ones that come to mind. NBC had Revolution and The Event.

  • Jennifer L Nedimyer

Of all of cancelled ones on Fox, why did Second Chance have to be one?!

    • Dennis Bowers

That one seemed to be the most obvious one to be cancelled.

    • Beverly Dancy

I kind of like that one too. Too bad. It had potential.

      • Jennifer L Nedimyer

Thank you! I’m quite picky about the shows I watch, this was getting really good. I can’t believe the ratings were so low. The only bad thing I’ve heard about it was the other comment on my post here.

    • Scott Parker

because it was science fiction and you liked it. Fox is so notorious for cancelling shows too early, especially anything sci-fi related… (cough, cough, FIREFLY, cough, AND A HUNDRED OTHER GOOD SHOWS, cough)…

      • Jennifer L Nedimyer

haha- yep! murphy’s law was written about my family 😉

    • jimv1983

I enjoyed it but want super attached to it. Knowing Fox and how it handles sci-fi shows I’m not surprised.

  • Anthony Lenzo

Bitten, Lost Girl ,Stike Back and Continuum were not cancel, they wrap up the series. Heroes Reborn was a 10 episode series to tie up some loose ends when the original series got canceled. The ones I was surprise that got cancel was The Good Wife and The Muppets.

    • 1000th_Monkey

Dunno about the Muppets (who in blazes would dare cancel a Disney property, especially since Disney and ABC are basically the same company?) but Good Wife ended, with wrap up episodes and everything. Not well (“in my opinion”) but it was a planned exit.

The listings here are misleading. Many of the shows labelled “cancelled” here in reality came to a series close.

    • jimv1983

Based on the way Heroes Reborn ended it was intended to continue. It ended on a cliffhanger.

  • Bob Adam

Too bad about hindsight, I liked that show, On the other hand how the hell is Last man on earth still on TV?

  • catsend

Nashville being canceled annoys me now. They wrapped up a bunch of loose ends and then ended it with a cliffhanger.

  • Cathy Cockerham

I went through this last year when Sirens was cancelled. I thought for sure that Netflix or something like Crackle would pick it up.  Now they are cancelling another favorite, Limitless, and once again I’m hoping that it will be picked up somewhere…Please? It is such a clever show, and they never forget the importance of humor.

    • jimv1983

Yeah, Limitless getting cancelled was my biggest upset this year but it was wrapped up well enough. Many shows like The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Terra Nova, The Event, Revolution and many others just ended on huge cliffhangers.

  • Sherri B

CBS seems determined to give me no reason to watch anything on their channel ever again. Maybe next year they can cancel Elementary and Madame Secretary and I can just remove the channel from my TV.

  • Pancho Villa

The older I get the more I’m in awe of these creative people and their shows. People talk about wasteland but some of these shows are truly brilliant and spectacularly inventive. If our leaders were even a tenth as impressive, we’d be set for life.

  • Cpt Obvious

I think the first episode of Supergirl gave me cancer!

  • Desiree Coats

I’m going to miss Person Of Interest. I think the government is afraid that America would know what’s on this series is partly true.

  • jimv1983

The one that made me the most upset was Limitless.

  • El Gato

    The Last Ship?

  • RobFromLoveland

No word on X-Files. The renewal was very weak compared to the original, but it might get better. What happened to the new versions of Lost?

  • Pilgrim22

People should have give The Grinder a chance, that show was funny as all get out – no, they rather be loosing brains cells watching 2 Broke Girls.

  • Lester Rhetoric

I was a POI and Limitless watcher, and Mysteries of Laura was OK the first season. CBS is getting nearly to the point that it drops shows as often as ABC. I don’t even watch any new ABC shows anymore because they simply get cancelled. I think the trend of superhero versus supervillan shows will quickly end as it is hard to care much with another new supervillan appearing the following week. That stuff should be on SYFY anyway.

  • Deborah Bianca Elizabeth Lasut

i don’t like most of the canceled or ended shows anyway

  • J T

Those who are arguing that there’s a distinction between cancelled shows that were given time to write in an ending, and those who did not are wrong– the difference between a show that ends or one that’s cancelled, is like the difference between a person who quits their job voluntarily, or a person who gets fired. A cancelled show that has time to write an ending is merely like a fired employee who is given the chance resign, rather than be terminated…

  • marc hillyer

I just want to say tat crowded was awesome and hopefully another network takes it. It was raw and original.

  • Lucia Moncada

I saw no Damian on that list…
