WWI “single-shot” thriller 1917 won top prize at the 31st annual Producers Guild Awards last night and in doing so punched its ticket as the official Oscar frontrunner for the 2020 season. Eight of the last 10 winners of the coveted PGA prize – Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures – have gone on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, including last year’s winner Green Book. 1917 will not be able to couple its big PGA win with a Screen Actors Guild win for Best Ensemble, as it failed to gain a nomination, so one of the PGA also-rans – Jojo Rabbit, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, or Parasite – still has a shot to equal the war film’s momentum heading into the final weeks of awards season.

On the TV front, Chernobyl continued its awards streak, taking home the big prize for a limited series, while Fleabag took out Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Comedy, and Succession won in the drama category.
