Break out some celebratory soda pop, because Netflix’s hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters may be back for another takedown.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Netflix and Sony, the studio behind the film, are currently in talks to develop a sequel to the surprise sensation, which debuted on the streamer on June 20, 2025 and built a massive word-of-mouth fanbase en route to becoming the most-watched English-language film in Netflix’s history (with 236 million views) and, after a surprise sing-along theatrical release just this past weekend, the first ever Netflix movie to win the box office with $18 million earned over just two days.

Its catchy soundtrack was also a runaway success, debuting at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart (the highest of any film soundtrack in 2025), and it became the first soundtrack to have four simultaneous Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the No. 1 song, “Golden” (“Your Idol” is at No. 4, “Soda Pop” is at No. 5, and “How It’s Done” sits at No. 10).

The story centers on a popular K-pop group called Hunt/x whose three female members are also secretly demon hunters; when a group of demons decides to form a boy band to steal their fans, Huntr/x jumps into action.

The film was co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans, who co-wrote the screenplay with Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan. Kang was inspired to come up with a culturally rooted story based on her own Korean heritage.

Since these are just preliminary talks, there’s no official word yet on the sequel, so it’s unknown if Kang and Applehans or the primary cast — Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo — will return. We also don’t know if the sequel would be another streaming film exclusive to Netflix, or if it might debut theatrically. Considering the success of the first film, more updates should be forthcoming soon.

KPop Demon Hunters is available to stream now on Netflix.
