It’s official… KPop Demon Hunters 2 is happening! Just over two months after its Netflix debut, the Certified Fresh animated musical has been greenlit for a second installment, which aims to premiere in the year 2029. The film quickly became Netflix’s most popular movie of all time, surpassing hits like Red Notice, Carry-On, and Bird Box.

Created by Sony Animation, KPop Demon Hunters follows Huntr/x, a fictional K-pop girl group who use their music to protect the world from demons. Sony’s licensing deal with Netflix brought the film to the streaming platform, where it found its massive global popularity.

Beyond its streaming success, Netflix and Sony also hosted two limited theatrical runs for the film: a sing-along event and a Halloween weekend re-release, which together grossed over $20 million.

And of course, the soundtrack played a huge part in its success. With chart-topping tracks like “Golden” spending weeks on the Billboard 200’s top 10, Huntr/x’s music has taken the world by storm. The real artists behind the group have since performed on late-night television and are set to appear in the upcoming Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

While specific talent deals of the sequel are still unknown, Netflix is closing the deal with the film’s directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, as well as Sony.

Although the 2029 release is still a long way off, fans can revisit the original film in all its glory.
