Paramount Pictures is gearing up for a major film based on Stephen King’s longest and one of his most iconic novels: The Stand. King, along with Paramount Pictures, are bringing in Doug Liman to make the on-screen adaptation happen.
Paramount has called upon Liman to direct a brand-new feature film adaptation of The Stand, King’s epic novel about a world ravaged by a deadly virus and the battle between good and evil that follows. Liman is also set to produce the project alongside Tyler Thompson, marking a reunion for the American Made duo.
While The Stand has been adapted for the screen before, most recently as a 1994 and 2020 miniseries, this new version marks the first time in years that Hollywood is pushing for a theatrical adaptation. Previous attempts by major directors including George A. Romero and Ben Affleck never got off the ground.
Set in a decimated America, The Stand follows a group of pandemic survivors forced to choose between two opposing forces: the saintly Mother Abigail and the menacing Randall Flagg, the latter of whom gathers his army in a lawless Las Vegas. Their final confrontation will decide the fate of what’s left of humanity.
Liman is known for incredible theatrical feats, from launching the Bourne franchise with The Bourne Identity to the cult-favorite Edge of Tomorrow, to last year’s hit Road House remake for Prime Video. King, meanwhile, continues to inspire works such as this year’s The Monkey and The Life of Chuck, with The Long Walk and a new Running Man also on the way.
Most details have been kept under wraps, so fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see what chaos Liman and King will cook up together.
