Amazon MGM is going big for their very first foray into the world of 007.
The James Bond franchise came along with MGM when Amazon acquired the studio in 2022, less than a year after Daniel Craig said goodbye (presumably) to the character in 2021’s No Time to Die. To continue the series, Amazon MGM has tapped Dune director Denis Villeneuve, giving the celebrated filmmaker the opportunity to take the reins of another childhood favorite.
“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,” Villeneuve said in a statement. “I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”
Villeneuve is also an executive producer on the film alongside his wife Tanya Lapointe, with David Heyman (the Harry Potter film series) and former Sony chief Amy Pascal serving as producers.
We don’t know anything else about the new film yet, but with Villeneuve on board, Amazon MGM can focus on finding a writer to work with him and, most importantly, ramp up the search for the next Bond, which is always a fun time.
Villeneuve most recently directed last year’s Dune: Part Two, which won two Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, but his filmography is littered with modern-day classics and fan favorites, from Sicario and Prisoners to Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.
