We weren’t sure how the summer movie season was going to pan out when the year began, but it proved to be a rather successful one. Now that summer is over, we don’t have quite as many big titles to look forward to, but there are still some interesting choices, and we asked you to pick the movies you were most looking forward to in September. Without further ado, here are your choices for the Most Anticipated Movies of September!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

This is probably not a surprise to anyone, but the most anticipated film of the month — by a wide margin — is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the follow-up to Tim Burton’s wacky 1988 supernatural comedy Beetlejuice. Core cast members Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, and of course, Michael Keaton are back, alongside newcomers Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Justin Theroux, and while this is one of those sequels nobody really asked for, we’re also absolutely don’t mind getting more of Keaton’s wild bio-exorcist.

Transformers One

Speaking of movies nobody asked for, we’re also getting a new animated film in the Transformers universe, specifically a prequel that harkens back to the time when a young Optimus Prime (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) were BFFs back on Cybertron. But thanks to a stellar voice cast that also includes Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, and Steve Buscemi, among others, as well as the involvement of Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley, this one has real potential.

Megalopolis

Francis Ford Coppola reportedly sold off part of his wine business to fund this long-in-development passion project, an epic sci-fi drama that parallels the fall of Rome to the fate of the United States. The film stars Adam Driver as an architect with grand visions to rebuild his city after disaster strikes it and Giancarlo Esposito as the mayor who has very different ideas in mind.

The Wild Robot

Based on the book series of the same name, this animated film bears the distinction of being the last to be produced completely in-house at DreamWorks. The story focuses on a robot (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o) that becomes marooned on an uninhabited island and learns to adapt and live alongside the local wildlife. Director Chris Sanders also gave us the classics Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon alongside Dean DeBlois, who serves as producer here, so the adaptation is in good hands.

Apartment 7A
(2024)
Release Date: September 27, 2024
Another horror classic gets the prequel treatment, as Apartment 7A serves as a prologue to the events in Rosemary’s Baby, focusing on the character of Terry Gionoffrio (played here by Julia Garner), the young dancer who meets a tragic end in Roman Polanski’s original 1968 film. The cast includes Dianne Wiest, Kevin McNally, and Jim Sturgess, and the film marks the sophomore effort of Natalie Erika James, who broke out with the Certified Fresh 2020 horror film Relic.
