Next "Trek" to Be a Prequel?

Well here’s some interesting news, doubly so if you’re a serious and well-versed Trekkie-type. Not only will J.J. Abrams be going back to visit the early days of Kirk, Spock, and Scotty … but he’ll also be including a fairly obscure character known as … Pike.

Now, Captain Pike was the guy Kirk learned the job from, and the serious "Star Trek" aficionadoes are well aware that Captain Pike appeared in the original "Trek" pilot, before William Shanter took over and made Captain Kirk an interstellar superstar.

Anyway, according to IGN Movies (who got the news from IESB.net and then expounded quite helpfully) it looks like Abrams is going to do precisely what I just said: Dig back into the "Trek" files and treat us to some of the earliest exploits of the Enterprise gang. Just like in "Hannibal Rising" or "Dumb & Dumber 2."

Oh, and none of this is even remotely set in stone, either. Abrams’ screenwriters, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, are still fine-tuning all sorts of stuff. But heck, it’s a fun series to talk about. Cuz we all know it.

(A lot) more info on "Star Trek XI" as it becomes available.
