This past December, Rotten Tomatoes polled hundreds of critics across the country to forecast which movies will reign supreme at the Academy Awards on February 26, 2017.
The honors were distributed relatively evenly among the contenders, with La La Land expected to win Best Picture, even though the majority of critics voted that Moonlight deserved to win the top honor. La La Land director Damien Chazelle is predicted to take home the award for Best Director. In the supporting categories, Mahershala Ali is thought to win Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight, and Viola Davis Best Supporting Actress for her turn in Fences. The critics also predicted Casey Affleck to win Best Actor for Manchester by the Sea, and Natalie Portman to win Best Actress for her role in Jackie.
According to our Editor in Chief, Matt Atchity, “Predicting the Oscars means you’re predicting how the Academy voters will respond to films, so it’s easy to understand why critics are predicting that La La Land will win Best Picture. This throwback-style musical about chasing creative dreams has many critics convinced that Academy voters will have a very personal reaction to the film, even though most critics think another awards contender, Moonlight, is actually the more deserving film.”
