Cannes 2008: Welcome to the Festival

Rotten Tomatoes is on the ground in the south of France.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since the 60th Annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2007, but a year it has been, and Rotten Tomatoes has been summoned back to the south of France to spend a couple of weeks taking in the sights, the sun and the occasionally movie. Welcome to Le 61em Festival de Cannes…

The world’s grandest and most important celebration of all things film, the Cannes Film Festival affords us an opportunity to gaze into the cinematic year ahead and we’ve no doubt we’ll be hearing about many of the films playing here again before the year is out. Last year Paranoid Park, Death Proof, No Country for Old Men and A Mighty Heart were a few of the movies that debuted, and this year promises to welcome its own share of treats.

This, as they say, is where the hungry come to feed. It’s not just about the films or the festival, all and sundry from Hollywood and just about every other movie-producing region in the world have descended on this charming little seaside town for a big old orgy of cinema. Buyers, sellers, actors, directors, chancers and hangers-on are all lining up for accreditation right now and if you’re not in this town for the next two weeks you’re most likely not employed within the film industry.

So stick with us as we provide daily coverage of the festival, from early reviews of the most important films playing (we’re already queuing up for Indy, so do forgive us if we miss anything that might screen before that…) to news, interviews and reports from the ground. In collaboration with IGN.com, your friendly European correspondents Chris Tilly, Joe Utichi and Orlando Parfitt will be on hand to pass on news as it breaks.

Now, if you’ll forgive us, we’re off to settle in, munch on a croissant and ready ourselves for tonight’s opening-night festivities.
