RT-UK Guide to Blu-Ray

Disc#1 – Casino Royale – 94%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 19/03/2007

Casino Royale disposes of the silliness and gadgetry that plagued recent James Bond outings, and Daniel Craig delivers what fans and critics have been waiting for: a caustic, haunted, intense reinvention of 007. But scribes also note “Casino” is hardly morose, with enough stunning action sequences and in-jokes to please the diehards. Some pundits even go so far as to say that Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Sean Connery.

#2 – Million Dollar Baby – 92%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 30/09/2007

Critics are calling Clint Eastwood’s film a knockout, with fine performances and filmmaking that elevate clichéd material to new emotional heights.

In this near-perfect suspense movie adapted from the popular 1960s television series that starred David Janssen, renowned vascular surgeon Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) has been falsely accused and convicted – on circumstantial evidence – of his wife’s (Sela Ward) murder. While Kimble is being transported to prison, another convict stabs an inattentive guard, causing a massive wreck. Kimble escapes but is hunted by tough U.S. marshal Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones). Spectacular special effects and a pulse-pounding performance by Ford turned Andrew Davis’s thrilling film into a blockbuster at the box office.

#4 – Lethal Weapon – 91%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 20/11/2006

Two tough Los Angeles cops, one who carries a lethal weapon (Glover) and the other who is one (Gibson), are teamed as partners in a highly unusual case involving a massive international ring which has its roots in Vietnam – a place they are both all too familiar with. This film, with its fresh, energetic combination of comedy, drama and action, has managed to spurn three highly successful sequels.

#5 – Brokeback Mountain – 87%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 30/09/2007

A beautifully epic Western, Brokeback Mountain’s gay love story is embued with heartbreaking universality, helped by the moving performances of Ledger and Gyllenhaal.

#6 – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – 83%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 04/12/2006

Tongue-in-cheek satire blends well with entertaining action and spot-on performances in this dark, eclectic neo-noir homage.

#7 – Hellboy – 79%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 19/03/2007

Hellboy is pretty derivative, but there’s enough wit and humour here to keep it entertaining.

#8 – Big Fish – 78%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 09/04/2007

A charming father-and-son tale filled with typical Tim Burton flourishes.

#9 – Gangs of New York – 77%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 30/09/2007

Though flawed, the sprawling, messy Gangs of New York is redeemed by impressive production design and Day-Lewis’s electrifying performance.

#10 – Syriana – 74%
UK Blu-Ray Release Date: 04/12/2006

Ambitious, complicated, intellectual, and demanding of its audience, Syriana is both a gripping geopolitical thriller and wake-up call to the complacent.
