Sam Raimi Dishes Some Dirt on Venom and Sandman!

Getting new info on a "Spider-Man" sequel is sometimes a pretty tough job. Heck, we’re so pumped for this series that we’ll get talking about any old thing … like whenever Kirsten Dunst opens her mouth. But director Sam Raimi recently shared a few thoughts with WizardUniverse.com, both of which focus on the newest "Spider-Man 3" villains.

Although it wasn’t Raimi’s original intention to use Eddie Brock (aka Venom) for the second sequel, he seems to be pretty excited to see how the character turns out in the editing room. He cites screenwriter Alvin Sargent and actor Topher Grace for fleshing the character out on his way from page to screen … but he’s still not entirely sure how the villain will "work" in the final film. (I think Raimi is perhaps being a little modest.)

Regarding Flint Marko (aka Sandman, as played by Thomas Haden Church), Raimi gets a little more analytical: It was important to the filmmaker that Sandman be a powerful villain, but still maintain some realistic emotion and viable motivation. The director gets a little vague in describing Sandman’s back-story, but I think it’s safe to say we won’t be getting a plain old black-and-white baddie.
