This week in TV news: X-Men pilot receives the go-ahead at Fox, TV icon Mary Tyler Moore dies at age 80, Alec Baldwin on SNLQueer Eye for the Straight Guy gets new life at Netflix, Stephen Colbert to host the Emmys, and Downton Abbey heartthrob Matthew Goode gets the royal treatment on The Crown.


X-Men TV Series Pilot Gets Greenlight at Fox

Mutants, rejoice! The long-brewing X-Men TV series pilot has received the go-ahead at Fox, complete with X-Men film anthology director Bryan Singer set to helm the first episode. Singer is also serving as executive producer on the show from Burn Notice writer and X-Men superfan Matt Nix, who will serve as showrunner. The plot of the potential series focuses on “two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.”

TV Icon Mary Tyler Moore Dies

TV icon and seven-time Emmy winner Mary Tyler Moore died Wednesday at the age of 80. The cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest following pneumonia, the New York Times reported. Moore portrayed one of the first career women on TV, starring as Mary Richards on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s. She received an Oscar nomination for her role in 1980’s Ordinary People. Moore was an outspoken advocate for many causes including Juvenile Diabetes research, due to her own journey with the disease, and animal welfare.


Alec Baldwin to Host SNL for 17th Time; Writer Suspended Over Inauguration Tweet

Alec Baldwin will get a chance to trump his previous Trump impressions when he hosts a full episode of Saturday Night Live for the – count em – 17th time on February 11. In more SNL news, writer Katie Rich was suspended over a tweet she wrote during the inauguration poking fun at Donald Trump’s 10-year-old son Barron. Rich’s suspension has been met with both cheers and jeers, sparking a #keepkatierich hashtag campaign on Twitter and a job offer from Community creator Dan Harmon, as well as calls for celebrities and the press to leave the president’s son alone.


Development News: Alan Cumming Goes Undercover, Queer Eye Returns, and More

In development news this week, actor Alan Cumming will remain at CBS after his long run on The Good Wife and star as an ex-CIA operative who is called back in to serve in the James Patterson spy adaptation Killer Instinct, which was ordered to pilot this week. Netflix is rebooting the early 2000s Bravo hit makeover show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The eight-episode new series, set to start production this spring, will bring on five new style experts. ABC announced pilots for The Good Doctor, a new show from House creator David Shore based on a Korean series about a surgeon with Savant syndrome; and Doomsday, about “the aftermath of 9/11, when the U.S. government institutes a secret think tank featuring the most creative minds in science and entertainment that is tasked with dreaming up man-made disaster scenarios and their possible solutions.” Over at CBS, the workplace drama The Get centers on a team of internet journalists. The Get is CBS’ fourth drama pilot order of the season. Fox has handed out a cast-contingent pilot order to the single-camera comedy Linda from HR, from exec producer Aaron Kaplan, who now has three pilots in the works this season. Not to be confused with Barb from Netflix’s Stranger Things, NBC has ordered a pilot for What about Barb?, a comedy series based on the 1991 Bill Murray/Richard Dreyfuss movie What About Bob?


Casting news: Colbert Scores Emmys Gig, Matthew Goode Heads to The Crown, and More

Late Show host Stephen Colbert will host the 2017 Emmys, which are set to air Sept. 17 on CBS. Mary-Louise Parker will play Janey Patterson, the younger sister of the late Olivia Trelawney, on Audience Network’s Mr. Mercedes. She’ll feature in a recurring role on the drama based on the Stephen King book of the same name. Downton Abbey and Good Wife alum Matthew Goode will head back to Britain as Anthony Armstrong-Jones – aka Lord Snowden – on Netflix period drama The Crown. Anna Friel, Louisa Krause, and Carmen Ejogo will star in the second season of Starz anthology series The Girlfriend Experience from executive producer Steven Soderbergh. Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz serve as showrunners, writers, and directors for two featured storylines in season 2. Bokeem Woodbine will appear in a recurring role in WGN series Underground‘s second season. And Mark Duplass (The Mindy Project, Togetherness) joins the cast of Discovery’s crime series Manifesto. Jeremy Bobb, Lynn Collins, Katia Herbers, and Brian F. O’Byrne will also star in the drama, which focuses on taking down Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, played by Paul Bettany.
