Jericho: The Movie?

CBS execs working on finding a way to cancel a feature film.

Hang onto your nuts, Jericho fans — you may need to send them to another media conglomerate before too long.

The CBS series, saved from cancellation by impassioned fans last season — only to find itself canceled again last week, when it was announced that this week’s episode would conclude the show’s run — might resurface on another network…or at a theater near you.

Such is the word from Carol Barbee, executive producer of Jericho, who sat down with SCI FI Wire this week to discuss behind-the-scenes developments at the show since its cast and crew were informed they were being cut loose again. Long story short: Cancellation isn’t quite the death sentence it used to be. As Barbee told SCI FI Wire:

I can’t really say [much] about specifics, and, … partially, it’s because I’m not the one having those conversations. [CBS] Paramount [Television, which produces the show,] has been pursing it, and our agents have been into that, so, you know, I am pushing those people and coming up with ideas to have those people pursue. There’s definitely an Internet series to be had, and we always talked about a graphic novel, and … a movie. I mean, there are lots of things that I could easily see as a way to continue the story.

As Moviehole‘s Ramius points out, “At the end of near every series run, someone — either an ‘insider’ or someone connected to the show — lets slip that their show is ‘rumored’ to be getting the big-screen treatment, and nine times out of ten, said film never happens.” Of all the options Barbee mentioned, moving to another network seems the most likely; the Sci Fi Channel and The CW are said to be interested in picking up the show for a third season.

On the other hand, nine times out of ten when a show is canceled, it doesn’t end up coming back for another season, so maybe the regular rules don’t apply to Jericho — and CBS Paramount, like any other entertainment company, knows that impassioned fans are a precious commodity in the era of the microculture. Either way, if rumors of an Arrested Development movie can persist for years, don’t expect the Jericho whispers to end anytime soon. To read more about the story, follow the links below!
