For more than 40 years, the Karate Kid franchise has entertained fans with a four-film series, a remake-spinoff, and a TV show continuation. Now, the two best-reviewed movies of the bunch are crossing over for Karate Kid: Legends, with original star Ralph Macchio and the 2010 version’s Jackie Chan uniting to train the next martial arts hero, played by Ben Wang. The initial reception for the new installment is mixed, but most agree that it lives up to its past while making a star to watch out of Wang. Also, everyone seems to love Chan and Macchio together.
Here’s what critics are saying about Karate Kid: Legends:
Legends can hold its head as one of the best installments so far, better than Karate Kid (2010), but nothing on Karate Kid (1984).
— Jack Shepherd, Total Film
As far as Karate Kid movies go, this one can’t match the surprisingly elegant characterization of the first movie, but at 94 crisply paced minutes, it’s less distended than the shockingly overlong 2010 remake, and feels less obligatory than the old Macchio sequels.
— Jesse Hassenger, Paste Magazine
Karate Kid: Legends is a sensational sequel, building on the classic underdog framework of the original 1984 Karate Kid movie, while working in fresh fun, familiar faces, and a dazzling new talent.
— Kristy Puchko, Mashable
This is a fun, breezy adventure that nests right into the world of Karate Kid and largely delivers on the action, laughs, and heart fans love about the IP.
— Ben Wasserman, CBR
While the team-up may be fun for fans of previous Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai, it also misses the emotional core of these coming-of-age stories.
— Matt Goldberg, The Wrap
[It] adds nothing original to the formula. It’s a formula that works, to be sure, making for a pleasant enough time filler. But that’s about it.
— Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter
Neither as fun as the early seasons of Cobra Kai nor as effective as the 2010 reboot, Karate Kid: Legends relies heavily on franchise favourites while bringing nothing new to the party.
— Tara Brady, Irish Times
Between the first couple of seasons of Cobra Kai and now Legends, The Karate Kid is the rare franchise that can boast one of the very best legacyquels as well as one of the worst.
— Matt Singer, Screen Crush

The movie grows out of that show’s ebullient spirit.
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
Much like Cobra Kai, Legends has a bit more to say beyond revisiting some Crane Kicking hits.
— Ben Wasserman, CBR
For anyone who’s seen Cobra Kai, [this has] a familiar format, echoing how LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence tried to teach their students both Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang.
— Jack Shepherd, Total Film
Karate Kid: Legends ignores essentially all the events of Cobra Kai… Fans hoping Karate Kid: Legends will continue its storyline in some way should adjust their expectations accordingly.
— Matt Singer, Screen Crush
The plot is a “paint by the numbers,” generic story…It is also a stereotypical, “feel good” movie where one roots for the underdog and isn’t disappointed in the end.
— Allison Rose, FlickDirect
So simple, so unironic, so cheesy-sincere, so analog that you may feel it transporting you right back to the “innocence” of the ’80s. And that’s the best thing about Karate Kid: Legends.
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
This is a surprisingly self-contained story all about Li, and a darn good one at that.
— Aidan Kelley, Collider
Turning the formula on its head where the young person will train an older person is a nice twist that still adheres to the standard beats of learning martial arts as material necessity and personal growth.
— Matt Goldberg, The Wrap
Karate Kid: Legends is like the IKEA instruction booklet for making a Karate Kid movie: a marvel of abbreviated, gestural storytelling that should be taught in schools as an example of what a perfectly structured script looks like.
— Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
This latest installment goes way beyond recycling the basic premise… They might as well have called it Karate Kid: Déjà Vu.
— Matt Singer, Screen Crush
The plot is just awful, crammed with so many cliches that you’re barely done chuckling at one before another kicks you in the head.
— Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

Older audiences will reminisce about watching Macchio play the Karate Kid. In comparison, younger audiences will enjoy the story and Ben Wang’s skills as an actor and martial artist.
— Allison Rose, FlickDirect
It’s certainly a crowd-pleasing film that will make you feel good all the way through, no matter how long you’ve been with the franchise.
— Mae Abdulbaki, Screen Rant
Setting the movie years after Cobra Kai certainly helps sell the movie to casual fans, allowing them to get into the story without having to cram six seasons of television into their heads in advance.
— Ben Wasserman, CBR
The movie ultimately chooses to work for its young audience more than its potentially nostalgic (or puzzled) parents.
— Jesse Hassenger, Paste Magazine
Karate Kid: Legends [is] a movie that understands its identity but still feels forced to cater to older fans in a way that neglects how well the film works for its target audience of younger viewers.
— Matt Goldberg, The Wrap
Starting off with a clip from 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II… there are numerous callbacks to past installments, and the end credits feature a cameo by one more franchise veteran.
— Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter
Karate Kid: Legends is a movie that, for better and worse, doesn’t let up, offering you no chance to catch a breath.
— Jack Shepherd, Total Film
At a cool hour and 34 minutes, the film understands what it means to keep a story tight and moving.
— Mae Abdulbaki, Screen Rant
Working in Karate Kid: Legends‘ favor is how it’s cut and paced a lot like Jeff Rowe’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. It’s jaunty and light.
— Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
The moment Daniel LaRusso is introduced, Karate Kid: Legends begins sprinting towards its closing moments at a jarring, breakneck pace.
— Aidan Kelley, Collider
Legends barely lasts 90 minutes, and it often feels like it’s been severely truncated in the editing room until all that remained were the training montages and fight scenes.
— Matt Singer, Screen Crush

The fight scenes are well-choreographed and entertaining.
— Mae Abdulbaki, Screen Rant
For those who are fans of action sequences and especially Karate and Kung Fu, they should especially be pleased with what first-time feature film director Jonathan Entwistle has done to showcase the art form.
— Allison Rose, FlickDirect
[The movie is] designed to give you that “This is not your father’s Ralph Macchio fairy tale!” feeling.
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
There’s some brilliant choreography on display, especially during one back-alley brawl that sees Li take on a bunch of ruffians. Yet, other fights are cut too fast, and some fancy camera work stops certain hits from having the impact they should.
— Jack Shepherd, Total Film
The fight sequences in Karate Kid: Legends can occasionally feel over-edited with one too many cuts and some creatively distracting animated additions, but on the whole, the fight choreography and stunt-work on display feels more elaborate than any of the prior films.
— Aidan Kelley, Collider
The fights are well-done, but nowhere near as crazy as what people saw on the Netflix series.
— Ben Wasserman, CBR
The fight choreography is passable but never impressive, and an over-reliance on shaky quick cuts drains out some much needed physicality. It doesn’t help that there’s surprisingly few of them.
— Wilson Chapman, IndieWire
It is incredibly funny with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that land at the right place and at the right time.
— Allison Rose, FlickDirect
Karate Kid: Legends had me laughing.
— Kristy Puchko, Mashable

Ben Wang is a great new lead for this series, not just for some stellar martial arts skills, but also for his almost effortless charisma and lovable personality.
— Aidan Kelley, Collider
He’s lithe and captivating.
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
The young actor exudes an electric, everyman appeal.
— Ben Truitt, USA Today
Wang is excellent not only as an actor but as a student of martial arts.
— Allison Rose, FlickDirect
Wang carries on Chan’s legacy by performing action skillfully while being funny.
— Kristy Puchko, Mashable
An early fight sequence positions Wang to be an able inheritor of Chan’s prop-heavy, comedic, hero-who-gets-hurt style, and he himself is a charming, effortless sort with a touch of ineffable star power.
— Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
There’s a natural charisma and vulnerability to Wang that lends itself well to Li’s journey… He’s also got a bit of an edge that, like Daniel in the original Karate Kid, defies the usual tropes of a picked-on teenage protagonist.
— Ben Wasserman, CBR
Watching them spar with Wang and each other is a treat to behold. There is a joy in watching them on screen together that audiences, young and old, will love.
— Allison Rose, FlickDirect
This tag-team of combat gurus turns out to be an ace comedy team.
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
The few moments where Han and LaRusso bicker over how to teach Li are highlights, albeit underutilized ones.
— Aidan Kelley, Collider
When Chan and Macchio share the screen, it is an absolute joy… It’s such a fun dynamic that you cannot help but partly begrudge the writers for not giving Chan and Macchio more to do.
— Jack Shepherd, Total Film

Sadie Stanley… acts with an eagerly ingenuous personality that feels entirely pre-social media, to the point that she evokes the Ally Sheedy of WarGames. (Yes, that’s a high compliment; keep an eye out for Sadie Stanley.)
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
Though he’s in a minor role, Wyatt Oleff is a scene-stealer as Alan, Li’s tutor.
— Mae Abdulbaki, Screen Rant
Like William Zabka back in the day, Knight nicely inhabits the unstoppable karate villain role, though the movie begs to spend a little more time with him.
— Ben Truitt, USA Today
The film’s villains are a bit of a low point… one-dimensional even by Karate Kid standards.
— Aidan Kelley, Collider
Connor and O’Shea feel like afterthoughts in a way other Karate Kid antagonists didn’t, albeit for more over-the-top reasons pre-Cobra Kai.
— Ben Wasserman, CBR
Karate Kid: Legends opens in theaters on May 30, 2025.

On our latest episode of the Awards Tour podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Awards Editor Jacqueline Coley chats with the always hilarious Nick Kroll, co-creator and star of the animated series Big Mouth, whose final season is available now on Netflix. For its eight-season run, Kroll has voiced over 80 characters, from the frazzled adolescent Nick Birch to the seductive crooning of Maurice, his Hormone Monster.
Click the video below to see Kroll talk about what it was like working with some of the funniest comedians and most talented actors in Hollywood on Big Mouth. He also reveals how his Comedy Central sketch show brought him to the attention of auteur filmmaker Jeff Nichols and teases some of his many projects coming out later this year. Check out all eight seasons of Big Mouth available now, and we’ll see you at the next stop on the Awards Tour.
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Eight seasons, 70 episodes — I counted 80-plus voices that you’ve done throughout the series. As you approach this final moment, folks are about to experience it for the last time. How do you feel about it?
Nick Kroll: I have mixed feelings about it. Obviously, I’m sad that it’s over because this is where the mixed part is. It’s been such an incredibly joyful experience to make this show for this many episodes with so many of my dearest friends or people that I’ve admired for a long time. It’s been a true joy, so it’s sad that it’s over, but also inside of what we were trying to do with the show, it makes sense that it had to keep evolving and changing and new things would then pop up from it.
Big Mouth is streaming now on Netflix

Want to know if your favorite television series is among the latest cancelled TV shows? Bookmark this page to learn about Disney+ and Netflix cancelled shows, when network series get the axe, and which cable TV limited series are being reworked as “anthologies” to squeeze every single drop of fan love (and awards) out of them.
How it works: Renewals are obvious: new season = yay! Cancelations are more complicated. When a network or streaming service announces that they’re not making another season of a show, we count that as cancelled (or “canceled” if you spell it without SEO considerations). Sure, some shows “come to a natural end,” but someone somewhere said “enough.” So to avoid debating the semantics of “cancelled” versus “retired,” we’re just going to go with the former. There are also some instances, either due to scheduling conflicts, or various delays, where the answer is “I dunno.” In those instances, we will leave the series as renewed and list the most recent season until we’re told otherwise.
Feel free to debate specific titles in the comments. But first: learn which series will live on, which were renewed and then cancelled, which are switching channels and which have simply reached their expiration date.
[Updated 5/28/25]
More Hacks on Max
Just ahead of its season 4 finale, the Max (soon to be HBO Max) comedy Hacks has been renewed for a fifth season. The series, which follows the relationship between a veteran comedian (Jean Smart) and the young writer she hires to work for her (Hannah Einbinder), has been a consistent top-five performer for the streaming platform since its debut in 2021. Season 4 saw Smart’s Deborah Vance achieve her lifelong dream of hosting a late-night talk show, with all the pressure and complications that come with the job.
Prime Video Halts The Wheel of Time
After completing its third season last month, Prime Video’s adaptation of the fantasy book series by Robert Jordan has been officially cancelled. Starring Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, and Madeleine Madden, The Wheel of Time centers on a powerful woman on a quest to identify and protect a young man prophesied to hold the power to either save the world or destroy it. While the show remained popular with fans, it was quite pricey to produce.
Yellowjackets Survives for Another Season
Just a little over a month after its season 3 finale, Showtime’s Emmy-nominated Yellowjackets has been renewed for a fourth go-round on Paramount+. The psychological thriller series, which has garnered a cult following, follows a high school girls’ soccer team whose plane crash lands in the Canadian wilderness, chronicling both their survival after the crash in 1996 and their adult lives in the present day. The show’s third season was reportedly its most-watched, with Paramount Co-CEO Chris McCarthy calling it an “utterly singular, genre-defying phenomenon — a perfect alchemy of psychological horror, survival thriller, and coming-of-age drama that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.”
Netflix Announces Slew of Renewals

During its upfront presentation in May, Netflix made a splash with big announcements for several of its popular series. The biggest was that its hit period romantic drama Bridgerton will premiere its fourth season in 2026 and that it has been renewed for two more season beyond that. The Keri Russell-led political thriller The Diplomat was renewed for a fourth season just ahead of its season 3 premiere. Young adult romance adaptations Forever and My Life with the Walter Boys have also been renewed, the former for a second season and the latter for its third. The recent comedy The Four Seasons, starring co-creator Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Colman Domingo, among others, was also renewed for a second season. Reality series Love on the Spectrum and Million Dollar Secret were both also renewed for season 4 and season 2, respectively, and lastly, the Michelle Buteau comedy Survival of the Thickest was renewed for a third season, which Netflix announced would also be its last.

We’re in the thick of the summer movie season now, hot off the heels of Lilo & Stitch racking up the biggest Memorial Day weekend haul ever. June is no slouch either, with plenty of big titles ranging from adrenaline-fueled action to quirky comedies and animated treats.
With that in mind, vote below in our poll for your Most Anticipated Movie of June before we tally up the votes and announce the top five on Thursday!

We said it last month, but it bears repeating: The summer months might be a great time for movies, but as a result, it’s a little tougher to find really compelling shows to watch at home, even in this golden era of streaming. That said, even with fewer big titles to choose from, the selection of June series is arguably stronger overall than May, with a few big shows debuting new seasons and a couple of new ones worth checking out.
Vote below in our poll for the Most Anticipated TV or Streaming Shows of June before we tally up the votes and announce the top five on Monday!

This week on the Awards Tour podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Awards Editor Jacqueline Coley sits down with Broadway legend Patti LuPone to discuss her role as Lilia Calderu in Agatha All Along. In it, she plays the divine Sicilian witch Agatha Harkness enlists to accompany her down “The Witches’ Road.” In their conversation, LuPone, who has been performing on Broadway for over five decades, jokes about not knowing where her career was headed when she got an unexpected call from Marvel to join the series.
Listen in as LuPone breaks down her career from Evita to Agatha All Along, praises some of her favorite Broadway performers, and teases what’s next for her career. You can watch every episode of Agatha All Along now on Disney+, and we’ll see you at the next stop on the Awards Tour.
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Thanks for sitting down with me. You just sat down with George Clooney for Broadway Actors on Actors. I have to ask about it.
Patti Lupone: Jessica Lange and I went to see Good Night, and Good Luck, in which George is starring, and he was fantastic! And the whole production is fantastic. And when we were leaving, we ran into the director David Cromer, and he said, “Do you want to go backstage?” And Jesse (Lange) and I went, “Does he want people backstage?” Because it’s a big performance. And then David said, “Yeah, he likes to see people.” So Jesse and I went backstage, and he greeted us like we were his long-lost friends. And it was like, wow! I mean, he is everything they say he is. He’s the most charming, generous, wonderful, and handsome person.
Agatha All Along is streaming now on Disney+

Tom Cruise has sprinted a little over 32,444 feet on screen throughout his 44 years in the movies, and with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning currently in theaters, the numbers on his cinematic pedometer have gone up. His tendency to run — a lot — in his 45 films has become a thing of legend; online, you’ll find 19-minute video supercuts of his sprints and style breakdowns that note his stellar form: eyes forward, elbows sharp, feet a blur. But does all that running indicate anything about the quality of his movies? That’s what we’ve investigated here, comparing the amount of running Tom does in his films to the amount of money they make and the amount of Freshness their Tomatometer scores.
The methodology was simple, if time-consuming. We counted every instance of Cruise’s running on screen, in seconds, and then calculated the distances by assuming he is clocking a six-minute mile (14.6 feet per second). The result is a list of estimated distances for each film that we believe is the most solid you’ll find in the online canon of Tom Cruise Running Materials. We then split his movies into four different distance categories, ranging from Zero Feet all the way to 1,000-Plus Feet, to spot the trends.
The biggest trend? Movies in which Cruise runs more than 1,000 feet have a higher Tomatometer average (a huge 76.5%) than the movies in which he runs less than that or not at all — and the same movies make more money at the box office, with an average inflated international gross of $483 million. We also found that the age-defying star has been increasing his movie running as he gets older: He covered almost the same amount of ground in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III (3,212 feet) as he did in the entirety of the 1980s (12 movies, 3,299 feet run), and five of his top 10 running films were released after 2010 — the year he turned 48.
You can find Cruise’s 10 biggest movies, according to how many feet he ran in them, at the bottom of this piece, but for now, let’s dig into the data, one sweaty category at a time.
[Updated 5/27/2025]
Magnolia (1999) | Lions for Lambs (2007) |Tropic Thunder(2008) | Valkyrie(2008) | Rock of Ages (2012)
When Tom stands still (or just dances and/or paces across a stage), he’s capable of outstanding supporting performances: think Tropic Thunder and Magnolia. He doesn’t cover much ground in these movies, but he does run away with off-brand appearances as chauvinistic alpha-males who built empires by essentially becoming evil versions of Tom Cruise. Ever wondered if Maverick could deliver expletive-filled monologues or dance convincingly to a Ludacris song? Look no further than these two tragically sprint-free R-rated treasures.
It’s no surprise that this category has the lowest box-office numbers — zero running suggests little action, the lifeblood of most box office-destroying blockbusters. Also, there is a high-risk, high-reward element for Cruise when he messes with his onscreen persona and plays against his action archetype. The rewards are Oscar and Golden Globe noms, but the risks are smaller financial returns — Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie (in which he resists the urge to run, even as bombs go off) were Cruise’s lowest domestic grossers of the 2000s.
Endless Love (1981) |Taps (1981) | Losin’ It (1983) | The Outsiders (1983) | Legend (1985) | Top Gun (1986) | The Color on Money (1986) | Rain Man (1988) | Cocktail (1988) | Days of Thunder (1990) | A Few Good Men (1992) | Interview With the Vampire (1994) | Jerry Maguire (1996) | Eyes Wide Shut (1999) | The Last Samurai (2003) | Jack Reacher (2012) | American Made (2017)
Seventeen of the 44 Cruise movies we analyzed fall into this category of “Some Running, But Not a Ton,” and it’s worth nothing that over 80% of these movies were released in the 1980s and 1990s. It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that Cruise really hit his stride, not coincidentally at around the time the Mission: Impossible series kicked off. Pre-1996, it was mostly light jogging and moments of panicked sprinting in movies like Endless Love (43 feet) and Losin’ It (102 feet). Nobody panic-sprints like Running Tom Cruise.
It was in 1996 that we got one of our most iconic non–action movie Tom Cruise Running scenes, as he dashes through the empty airport in Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire. Most sport agents you probably know — because you know so many, right? — would huff and puff during a late-night airport dash like that, but Jerry looks effortless as he strides like a gazelle through the terminal. Tom, you had us at ready, set, hello.
All the Right Moves (1983) | Risky Business (1983) | Born on the Fourth of July (1989) | Far and Away (1992) | Mission: Impossible (1996) | Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) | Vanilla Sky (2001) | Collateral (2004) | Knight and Day (2010) | Oblivion (2013) | Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Another great moment of 1996 Tom Cruise Running came with the franchise-spawning smash Mission: Impossible. The Brian De Palma-helmed thriller really set the pace for Cruise’s days of thunderous running. Remember the moment when Ethan Hunt uses explosive gum to blow a hole in a restaurant fish tank to escape his would-be captors — on foot? We do, along with every other one of the 730 feet he ran in the film.
Five years later, another important milestone in Cruise’s running career came with Vanilla Sky. The film marked his second collaboration with Cameron Crowe, and they celebrated their sophomore adventure with a longer and more complicated bit of running than we’d seen in their first effort: the Vanilla Sky production team shut down Times Square to create an eerily empty track meet for Cruise (the movie features a total of 832 feet of running). The film wasn’t as financially successful as Jerry Maguire (it made $203.3 million internationally), but we almost have to give Crowe bonus points for realizing the potential of giving Running Tom Cruise longer, bouncier locks.
Overall, a few misfires — Knight and Day, Oblivion — drive down this category’s Tomatometer, which includes some of Cruise’s most iconic and acclaimed performances (M:I, Born on the Fourth of July, Collateral).
The Firm (1993) | Minority Report (2002) | War of the Worlds (2005) | Mission: Impossible III (2006) | Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) | Edge of Tomorrow (2014) | Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) | Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) | The Mummy (2017) | Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) | Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One (2023) | Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)
The older Tom gets, the farther he runs, and the better his movies seem to be. Eleven of the 12 movies in this longest-distance grouping were released after 2002, and six of them were released after 2010 (The Firm is the only pre-2002 outlier). It was 2002’s Steven Spielberg-directed Minority Report that ushered in the 1,000-plus feet era (1,562 feet run), and trainer/director Spielberg upped the punishing routine in the 2005 blockbuster War of the Worlds (1,752 feet). Watching Cruise evade aliens while thousands of slower non-Tom Cruises were turned into dust was impressive, but not surprising: Cruise’s indefatigable onscreen cardio had built up over five decades, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
After War of the Worlds, Cruise reached a personal best in Mission: Impossible 3, which saw him running 3,212 feet, most of which were covered in some insane displays of athleticism (and Herculean camera work) through Shanghai. His movies since — like Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2,628 feet), Edge of Tomorrow (1,022 feet), and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (1,518 feet) — have crossed the 1,000-foot mark, but they haven’t managed the wild lengths of his 2000s movies. Only Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol could match those films’ step counts and box office success with 3,000-plus feet of running and a $695 million international gross.
The biggest snags in the More Running = Better Movies formula are Jack Reacher: Never Look Back and The Mummy. Both films featured abundant running (1,051 feet and 1,022 feet, respectively), but both had unspectacular box office returns ($159 million and $410 million internationally) and critical receptions (Tomatometer scores of 38% and 15%).
In other words, more running = more money and more Freshness, but only most of the time.
Top Tom Cruise Movies (According to his pedometer)

Welcome to the latest edition of “Take That Chicken Little.” Despite a few early months not producing a lot of theatergoing (despite outdoing previous years) and a March certainly worth forgetting, the box office bounced back in a big way with A Minecraft Movie and Sinners in April. The theaters-are-dead-streaming-satanic-panic crowd had to go back into hiding. Wondering what the narrative will be now that theaters were just treated to the biggest Memorial Day weekend of all-time. By the time Monday ends the box office is expected to have made over $325 million in four days, shattering the record of $305.9 million held since 2013.
For all the hubbub over Snow White and reports of Disney shutting down future live-action projects, there will be no negative reports over the numbers for Lilo & Stitch. Not only did it best the latest Mission: Impossible film this weekend (to no surprise), but it also passed Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick for the highest Memorial Day weekend ever with $145.5 million over the weekend and $183 million estimated through the holiday, besting the $160.5 million start for Cruise’s sequel back in 2022. The Lion King live-action redux of 2019 opened to $191.7 million and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast began with $174.7 million. This is actually the fifth-best start for Disney that doesn’t involve Star Wars or Marvel.
Just the other day I wrote a speculative piece about the summer box office, wondering if any film would hit $400 million. That speculation may have been short-lived. I had Stitch very high on the chart, along with the upcoming Superman and Jurassic World: Rebirth, and I did say if the film exploded this weekend to around $175 million, it would be in that conversation. Well, here you go. In fact, the only Disney films to open with over $140 million in their first three days that failed to reach $400 million were Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor: Ragnarok is the only other title to fail the reach the milestone after opening to over $120 million. That is out of 27 titles. Globally, Lilo & Stitch is over $304 million already, eclipsing what the original 2002 animated film did ($273.1 million), and at a budget of just $100 million, this is one of the biggest hits of the year already.
We will in no way dismiss the efforts of Tom Cruise entirely as he puts a close to one of the greatest action franchises in film history. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is slated to make an estimated $77 million through the holiday, which is right on par with the strange glass ceiling these films have had over the years. The Final Reckoning at least poked through it with the highest three-day weekend of them all with $63 million, just barely beating the $61.2 million high established by the sixth entry, Fallout, in 2018, which is also the highest domestic grosser at $220.1 million. In a weird Star Trek kind of way, it has been the even-numbered films in the series that have all grossed over $200 million, with the low bar being the third film at $134 million and 2023’s Dead Reckoning with $172.1 million.
Even Dead Reckoning, with all the disappointment coming up short on a high budget and opening just before Barbie and Oppenheimer, belongs in the remarkably consistent frame of this franchise. All but the first and third films have grossed over half a billion globally. Over time, we are talking a $1.32 billion domestic gross and $2.81 billion internationally for a $4.13 billion global haul over 30 years. Lest we think Paramount might be upset with the roughly reported $600-700 million spent on these last two pictures, even if this film’s ultimate grosses are labeled a disappointment, we’re still talking about $1 billion in profit for the M:I franchise over time. Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, and the whole team earned this swan song. Worldwide the film is already at $190 million and will undoubtedly join the half-billion crowd. Whatever the final number is, congrats are in order.
Third place goes to another film that has exploded, and that is Final Destination: Bloodlines. It took just six days for the film to become the highest-grossing domestic release in the franchise. After $19.6 million through Sunday and an estimated $24.5 million through the holiday, its 11-day total would be $94.6 million. A few more days and it will be come the 181st R-rated film to gross over $100 million since 1980 and, obviously, the first Final Destination film to do so. Mad Max: Fury Road made $94.7 million in its first 11 days, but it also had a $31.2 million haul over the holiday weekend. If Bloodlines continues to trend below, it will be looking at a landing in the $140-150 million domestic range. In just 11 days, it will have busted the record of 2009’s The Final Destination, which made $186 million worldwide — Bloodlines‘ global take is at $187 million.
Hanging on in fourth place is Disney and Marvel’s Thunderbolts* with $9.1 million through Sunday and an estimated $11.6 million through Monday. Last week we sounded the alarm that $200 million was not a guarantee for this MCU entry. After 25 days, the film is at $173.8 million. In the same period in 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was at $187.1 million after a $10 million Memorial Day weekend. That film was out of the top 10 just two weeks later. Three weeks later it was grossing under a million per weekend until finalizing its run with just $202 million. Thunderbolts* may not fall off as quickly, but being behind that curve by roughly $13 million is a lot to make up. Captain America: Brave New World was at $177.2 million and had an $8.38 million three-day fourth weekend, and it just barely made it over $200 million. The smart money has Thunderbolts* finishing in the $195 million region. Marvel must have sensed it, as they just moved its upcoming Avengers movies out of their summer release slots in 2026 and 2027 to the Christmas season. Thunderbolts* is only at $353 million worldwide and still has plenty of red in its ledger.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is over $200 million and then some. In fact, this weekend it has passed the $250 million milestone. Only Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book redo in 2016 had a better Memorial Day weekend for a film in its sixth weekend of release ($10.94 million 3-day). Sinners made $8.7 million over the weekend and an estimated $11.2 million through the holiday to bring its total to $259 million. That is $36+ million ahead of the pace of the highest-grossing original R-rated film in history (The Hangover), which made $9.9 million in weekend six. Sinners is going to become the new champion of that statistic. As for its reach for $300 million, it is currently about $3 million off the pace of Inception, which had a $7.8 million sixth frame and finished with $292 million. Sinners looks to be in that vicinity, but every weekend of its release so far has taught us to keep looking upwards, so stay tuned, because it still has a real chance. Globally the film is over $339 million.
Sixth place goes to the latest release from Angel Studios. The Last Rodeo, starring and co-written by Neil McDonough, opened with $5.2 million over the weekend and an estimated $6.2 million through the holiday. McDonough’s last collaboration with the faith-based pay-it-forward company, Homestead, had a three-day $6 million haul over the Christmas holiday and finished with $20.8 million (a 3.46 multiple), the studio’s third-highest gross behind breakouts Sound of Freedom and this Easter’s The King of Kings.
Into seventh place after its second expansion is Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship with Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. The well-publicized film is in 1,055 theaters this weekend and grossed $4.5 million over the weekend for an estimated $5.7 million through the holiday. Looking at A24 expansions in this manner, very early in their history they moved Spring Breakers from three theaters into 1,104 in weekend three, when it grossed $4.8 million. Last October they pushed We Live In Time from five theaters into 985 and it made $4.2 million. They may have thought of going harder over the holiday and at least try to beat the Angel Studios release. Word of mouth will obviously be necessary to propel this one further, as it currently stands at $7.1 million in its first 10 days; We Live In Time was at $11.7 million and Spring Breakers was at $10 million, and each ultimately grossed $24.6 million and $14.1 million, respectively. A24 will be opening Bring Her Back this upcoming weekend.
A Minecraft Movie should be getting some company in the $400 million ranks soon, but it continues chugging along with another $2.8 million estimated through the holiday. That brings its total to $421.4 million and $940 million worldwide, likely coming up just short of a billion. Amazon’s The Accountant 2 saw another $1.59 million come from Friday through Sunday and an estimated $2.5 million through Monday to bring its total to $63.4 million. Trey Edward Shults’ Hurry Up Tomorrow with The Weeknd and Jenna Ortega lost over 500 theaters after a single week and fell nearly 78% in weekend two with $740,000 over the weekend and an estimated $930,000 through the holiday. The total gross for the $15 million production is currently at $5 million.
Sony is hoping another go with the Karate Kid franchise will provide them with another summer hit. Karate Kid Legends combines their reboot sensei in Jackie Chan with the original student in Ralph Macchio for a new apprentice. As mentioned, A24 is releasing the latest horror film from the directors of Talk To Me. Bring Her Back is hoping to capture the same audience as the fifth-highest grossing film in the studio’s history. Also in limited release, Focus is hoping that Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme puts up the biggest per-theater average of the year, as his fanbase has made each of his films a contender for that title upon release.

[Updated May 22, 2025]
The story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel Studios itself has been a tumultuous one since the release of Avengers: Endgame. The Phase Four films and television shows left audiences wondering if there was a new saga at all. The need to generate material for Disney+ also left many feeling the studio was unfocused and overextended. At SDCC 2022, studio president Kevin Feige tried to quell some of these misgivings by revealing the full calendar for Phases Five and Six, labeling the whole thing as “The Multiverse Saga.”
But almost as soon as the Multiverse calendar was made public, alterations were made. Movies shifted release dates and production schedules. Two industry strikes forced all television and movie production to grind to halt. Disney itself changed its priorities and instructed Marvel to slow its pipeline. The expected big bad of the new saga, Kang the Conqueror, proved unimpressive in his true debut appearance — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — while the actor who portrayed him faced criminal charges in New York. He was ultimately let go from his Marvel contract, but it was unclear if Kang would carry on or be completely replaced with a difference character. And it just so happened that Doom seemed to be the logical replacement and Robert Downey Jr. was available…
It all reveals that, despite the planning involved, Marvel Studios is malleable and ready to alter those plans if need be.
Meanwhile, back in the MCU, heroes must rise, ne’er-do-wells must do what they do, and Marvel’s First Family must get ready for their moment in the spotlight. And, as we have for the last few years, we’re keeping track of it all in this comprehensive guide of every upcoming Marvel Studios film (and television show) with a handy calendar of the studio’s projects through 2027 (and beyond).
As always, we will continue to update this page frequently as new details emerge. And be careful: There are spoilers ahead. (Want to see what the other camp is up to? Check out our full breakdown of upcoming DC Studios movies.)
The SDCC 2024 presentation was full of bombast — from a Deadpool choir singing “Like A Prayer” to the Downey as Doom reveal — but was surprisingly short on words like “phase”, “Multiverse”, and “saga.” Consequently, it is unclear if that system of notation is still in place. What you can expect in lieu of phases are three films set for release in this year with an air of espionage and, later, family. Also, there are a few TV shows readying for release that may still matter to the ongoing threads of Marvel storytelling…
Premiere Date: June 24, 2025
What We Know: Based on the character introduced into Marvel comics by Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato (with a subsequent redesign by Eve Ewing and Kevin Libranda), Riri Williams (Dominque Thorne) is a robotics genius who builds a suit of armor more advanced than anything Tony Stark devised in his lifetime. But she is forced to recreate it when Wakanda’s Queen Shuri (Letitia Wright) forbids her from taking it back to the United States. A second attempt to manufacture it gets her expelled from college, so she is forced to team up with a Chicagoland enigma known as the Hood to finish the new suit. In April of 2021, word broke indicating poet and Snowpiercer veteran Chinaka Hodge will serve as the program’s head writer and executive producer. The following February, Anthony Ramos joined the cast as the MCU’s version of The Hood while Lyric Ross also joined as Riri’s best friend. That April, Ryan Coogler’s Proximity production company signed on to produce while Blindspotting‘s Angela Barnes and Dear White People‘s Sam Bailey climbed aboard to direct. Additional cast members added in the summer of 2022 include Manny Montana, Shea Couleé, and Alden Ehrenreich in a key role. Although filmed some time ago, reports in February of 2023 indicated the series would move to a 2024 release as Disney and Marvel sought to slow the output of both films and television. In June of 2023, Anji White emerged as another member of the cast. Eventually, a rumor suggesting the series would be delayed to 2025 was confirmed by Disney in mid-2024.

At the 2024 D23 Entertainment Showcase, the series emerged once more into the light with Coogler professing his love for Riri as a character, saying “I always knew she had more to her story.” A sizzle reel for the series also indicated it may be one of the more grounded MCU television shows even if Riri succeeds in building her armor. Some of this footage is on display in the October 2024 Disney+ sizzle reel, which also confirmed the program’s Summer 2025 slot on the calendar. In May of 2025, Disney released a trailer for the series (above) condensing much of the info from the D23 presentation into a matter of seconds, but giving Ramos’s Hood more of a moment to shine.
How It Fits in the MCU: Riri debuted in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Considering she is one of the younger Marvel characters, we imagine she will cross paths with Kamala and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) before too long. Also, with her connection to Stark, we think she will be part of the upcoming Armor Wars feature in some fashion (more on that project below).
Release Date: July 25, 2025
What We Know: At the 2019 Comic-Con, Feige merely mentioned he “ran out of time” to discuss the Fantastic Four or mutants. While both concepts eventually made their way into the MCU, we always expected that integrating Marvel’s first family would be the priority. And like many on the internet have suggested, they will debut in an alternate 1960s — an elegant way to introduce them and acknowledge their absence in the prime MCU all this time. In that context, they also serve as a great replacement for the similarly time-lost Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). In December of 2020, Marvel announced Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts would helm the project, but then announced his departure in April 2022, just a week or so shy of John Kransinski making a cameo as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Some expected him to direct the movie. The actor did not appear at the 2022 Comic-Con presentation and Feige said little else about the film beyond its release date and its originally intended place as the Phase 6 opener. At the subsequent D23 Expo, he confirmed WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman would direct the film. Shortly thereafter, Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer signed on to write the script. In March of 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water‘s Josh Friedman came aboard to write a new draft. And after years of speculation, Pedro Pascal emerged in November 2023 as the actor to play the Cursed Richards. In February of 2024, Marvel confirmed Pascal will indeed be Mr. Fantastic with Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach joining him as the rest of the team. Filming began at the end of July. Other cast members include Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, and Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer. Additionally, Ralph Ineson will play Galactus, who fans at SDCC 2024 caught a glimpse of thanks to a pre-filming sizzle reel the cast brought with them from London. The reel also gave those in attendance a sneak peak of the Fantastic Four’s alternate reality, Pascal’s voice for Reed, and the fabulous Fantasticar, a piece of tech ripped straight from the comics that looks quite at home in the retro-futurist ’60s of the film. Also, Feige confirmed the film will be titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps and that Michael Giacchino will provide the score.
Following the panel, Pascal and Kirby offered us some thoughts on the film’s period setting.
The pre-filming reel was shown again at the D23 Entertainment Showcase, scoring a bigger response when Galactus appeared on screen. Although, that may have to do with the venue holding twice the audience of Comic-Con’s Hall H. Filming continued into the Fall of 2024 with a cadre of Marvel Comics creators visiting the set at some point. Since then, teasers and first looks have offered potential fans a lot to consider, including a better look at H.E.R.B.I.E. (Matthew Wood), the family’s robotic helper.
How It Fits in the MCU: The Fantastic Four bring with them a surprisingly robust rouges gallery. To be honest, we’re a little more excited to see Doom and Galactus make their MCU introductions than the Richards clan. Nevertheless, that alternate 1960s is something we’re excited to see even if it is in a variant Marvel universe. Meanwhile, Thunderbolts* offered a glimpse of the Four, but are they really on their way to the many MCU Earth?
Premiere Date: August 6, 2025
What We Know: The anthology miniseries focuses on different protectors of Wakanda throughout its history. A clip shown at the 2024 D23 Marvel Animation presentation revealed a female Black Panther protecting her nation’s vibranium resources during the Age of Piracy, for example. Former Marvel storyboard artist Todd Harris serves as the series director and creator while Black Panther director Ryan Coogler serves as an executive producer.
How It Fits in the MCU: Unlike the other animated programs, Eyes of Wakanda details the history of Wakanda within the MCU. Of course, despite the presence of Coogler as an executive producer, we imagine he reserves the right to contradict anything revealed here in a subsequent Wakanda-set project (more on that below). The series will also establish the presence of an Iron Fist in the MCU, although it is unclear if this will undo the one featured in the Netflix Iron Fist series.
Premiere Date: October 2025
What We Know: Spinning off from a season 1 What If…? episode, various Marvel characters attempt to survive a zombie apocalypse. During the D23 Marvel Animation presentation mentioned above, the audience saw an extended clip establishing the fall of San Francisco and, five years later, Shang-Chi, Katy, and Jimmy Woo driving a zombie-infested version of the Fury Road. While it is unclear if the live action actors reprise their roles here, Iman Vellani is set to voice Kamala Khan, who is said to be central to the miniseries. Other characters trying to survive include Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, and Blade(!). What If…?‘s Bryan Andrews serves as director with Zeb Wells taking on head writer duties.
How It Fits in the MCU: By virtue of its zombie conceit, Marvel Zombies happens somewhere besides Earth-616. Although, it is always possible zombies could becoming a thing in the mainline MCU…
Premiere Date: December 2025
What We Know: Initially an untitled series tied to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton’s overall deal with Disney, news broke in June of 2022 that the project is, indeed, a Disney+ show centering on Wonder Man. At first a villain, the character saw the error of his ways (after dying, of course) and eventually joined the Avengers as a member in good standing. Also of note: his brain patterns were utilized to create Vision in the comics. Andrew Guest serves as head writer on the program with Cretton acting as an executive producer. He also directed episodes with Guest becoming the showrunner after a change in direction at Marvel towards a more traditional TV development model. In October of 2022, Aquaman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II emerged as the star of the series with Ben Kingsley also signing on to play in-universe actor Trevor Slattery once again. Additional cast includes Mindhunters‘ Lauren Glazier, Ed Harris (reportedly as Simon’s agent, Neal Saroyan) and Josh Gad. In February of 2023, The Photograph‘s Stella Meghie emerged as one of the program’s episode directors. That March, Demetrius Grosse joined the series as Eric Williams, Simon’s brother and eventual coma-inducing Marvel villain Grim Reaper. Production was underway when the WGA strike began and, like all other active Marvel productions, stopped filming. It resumed in November following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Feige told The Official Marvel Podcast in June 2024 that the series is “extremely different” from the others. In October 2024, Marvel fans finally got their first glimpse of the series as part of an overall Marvel Disney+ preview. It featured Abdul-Mateen, as Simon Williams, auditioning for the part of Wonder Man and Slattery claiming the role is important for them both. It’s unclear why or how it will lead to Williams becoming a hero, though. The eight episode series will debut in December.
How It Fits in the MCU: Wonder Man could help resolve the mystery of White Vision (Paul Bettany) and, perhaps, aid him in integrating all his memories. But as Wonder Man’s civilian identity is an actor, there may also be another chance to illustrate what movies look like in the MCU, especially if Wonder Man is already a fictional character within the MCU. Although, with the series positioned as “Marvel Spotlight” story, it may end up having little or no connections to the ongoing saga.
As revealed at the SDCC 2022 presentation, Phase Six was to begin with Fantastic Four and conclude with a two-part Avengers film series sprawling into 2027. It is unclear if phases are still part of the plan, but for the moment we’re holding onto the nomenclature for all the projects set for release after Fantastic Four until Feige offers an update on this aspect of the Marvel Method.

Release Date: July 31, 2026
What We Know: Mere hours into Spider-Man: No Way Home’s theatrical run, Feige confirmed Marvel Studios and Sony were already developing a fourth MCU Spider-Man film. Indeed, No Way Home producer Amy Pascal indicated in early December of 2021 that a second trilogy was in the works, but Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman walked that back at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. And yet, the conclusion of No Way Home makes it clear Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has a part to play in the saga to come. In the meantime, of course, he still needs to clear Spider-Man’s name and get some vestige of his life back. Also, there is that piece of Venom left behind in Mexico… In February of 2023, Feige confirmed Marvel has a story in mind for a fourth film, but offered little else, and after the release of the animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse that June, Pascal gave Variety an interview in which she confirmed development on a number of Spider-Man-related titles, including a new Tom Holland film. Talks regarding the project were halted as the WGA went on strike. In April of 2024, Holland told Deadline the film will have to wait until all concerned parties have “cracked” the script, but by early October, he said the script was nearing a satisfying state and that he would be shooting in 2025. Just a month earlier, reports surfaced indicating Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton was in talks to helm the picture. And by the end of October, Sony — who still controls distribution of the MCU Spider-Man movies — dated the fourth entry for July 2026 with Cretton as director. At the moment, it is the only MCU movie scheduled between the two Avengers films, although it is possible one of the projects below may coalesce into a late 2026 or early 2027 release. In March of 2025, Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink joined the cast in an undisclosed role. Naturally enough, pundits online quickly guessed the young actor will be the next person to play X-Man Jean Grey in live action. Later that month, Sony revealed the film’s subtitle: Brand New Day. Taking its name from a Marvel Comics story in which Peter experiences a new status quo after making a deal with Mephisto, we expect the film will deal with the consequences of the MCU Peter’s choice at the end of No Way Home. It also offers up another character for Sink to play: the superhero known as Jackpot, who Peter mistakes for Mary Jane Watson in the comics.
How It Fits in the MCU: While many speculate the film will continue No Way Home‘s Multiversal focus, we think it could concern itself with a hero trying to re-establish his cred in a New York filled with Hawkeyes and Daredevils while also dealing with a more basic suit. Also, it is always possible he’ll find organized Wilson Fisk as his new opponent. And as for Sink’s character? We think she’ll might be one of Spider-Man’s amazing friends.
Avengers: Doomsday (2026)
Premiere Date: December 18, 2026
What We Know: The fifth Avengers film will presumably set up the endgame of The Multiverse Saga if that term is still in use at Marvel. On July 26, 2022, word broke indicating Destin Daniel Cretton would direct the film. That September, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness signed on to craft the script. During the press tour for Quantumania, he teased the film will be a “bloodbath” and inspire the next generation of Avengers. In November of 2023, both Loveness and Cretton walked away from the project with Michael Waldron taking over scripting chores. At SDCC 2024, Feige announced Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo will return to helm the film (and its follow-up), confirming earlier reports. The pair then revealed the film’s new subtitle: “Doomsday.” The picture will introduce Downey’s Doctor Doom and, we assume, how he ends up controlling the Multiverse. Feige also mentioned many of the characters from the 2025 theatrical releases — including the Fantastic Four — will appear in the upcoming Avengers films. In late 2024, word broke indicating Chris Evans will return for the film, although is unclear if he will come back as Steve Rogers, Johnny Storm, or another character out in the Multiverse who happens to look like the actor. But with subsequent reporting suggesting Hayley Atwell is also set to return, it is possible they could be the same Steve/Peggy we saw dancing during Endgame‘s conclusion. Evans subsequently denied the reports of his return, though. In March of 2025, Marvel livestreamed an hours-long cast announcement video, in which the camera slowly progressed along a seemingly neverending line of director’s chairs with Doomsday cast members’ names on them, The list included not only returning Avengers actors like Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie, but also the stars of Thuderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, and several returning stars from the original X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, not to mention Robert Downey Jr., who was the only one sitting in his chair and ended the video by hushing the viewers. Notably absent from the list, however, were Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, and the aforementioned Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.
How It Fits in the MCU: Presumably, Downey’s Doom hails from an alternate Earth — maybe even the same one as the Fantastic Four — but how could such a Doom become aware of the Multiverse and the tapestry Loki (Hiddleston) now maintains? Will he have to face off against the God of Stories first? Or does their shared love of the color green indicate something else? Also, is this the real last stand for the 20th Century Studios X-Men?
Release Date: 2026
What We Know: Just ahead of Daredevil: Born Again‘s premiere in March 2025, word broke indicating a Punisher special is in development. The current plan is to release it in concert with Born Again‘s second season in 2026. Jon Bernthal will not only reprise his role as Frank Castle, but co-write the special alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Plot details are, of course, unavailable.
How It Fits in the MCU: With Frank making his proper MCU debut in Born Again‘s first season, it remains to be seen what sort of state he is in for that series or the special. But we keep wondering if Frank was Blipped. If that’s the case, making someone pay for those lost five years could fuel a 50-minute special.
Premiere Date: 2026
What We Know: In October of 2022, reports surfaced of a potential series staring Paul Bettany as the White Vision featured in WandaVision and his struggle to regain the memories the Hex Vision imparted to him. WandaVision and Agatha head writer Jac Schaeffer reportedly supervised a writers room that Fall, but it was unclear if the project was still moving forward, particularly when Disney and Marvel were looking to slow down development of the slate and the strikes rewriting all the calendars. For a time, it seemed as though the project was one of the reported “quiet” cuts as Disney and Marvel refocused on a slower output, but in late May 2024, Star Trek: Picard‘s Terry Matalas signed on to run the show and serve as executive producer. It appears his is a new take on the concept differs from the one Schaeffer was developing. But with Disney projecting a 2026 premiere, it is currently on more solid footing than some of the other projects listed below. Adding to its stability: reports indicating James Spader will return to voice Ultron, the character he played all the way back in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In September of 2024, frequent Matalas collaborator Todd Stashwick reportedly joined the cast. Then, in January 2025, new reports suggested Iron Man‘s Faran Tahir would return as Raza, the Ten Rings captain who captured Tony Stark in that 2009 film, setting off the entire MCU.
How It Fits in the MCU: Even if Matalas is starting from scratch, the program still has one objective: restore Vision in time for the fight against Doom. Then, maybe, it will be time to deal with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), who we believe to be very much alive. Also, the reported presence of Raza may offer an opportunity to reveal what the Ten Rings looks like after the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Avengers: Secret Wars (2027)
Premiere Date: December 17, 2027
What We Know: The sixth Avengers film will conclude Phase 6 and The Multiverse Saga (if either term is still in play). The title also offers a few clues as Marvel Comics has published two epic stories with that name. The first saw heroes and villains transported to Battleworld so the Beyonder could watch them fight. The second saw some heroes remembering how their Mutliverse was before various incursions collapsed it and plotting against Doom, the unquestioned master of all reality, to restore the realities they loved. Also, Spider-Man Miles Morales joined the mainstream Marvel Comics Universe in the aftermath. In October 2022, Loki‘s Michael Waldron signed on to write the script, but it is unclear if his draft is the one the Russo Brothers will use. At SDCC 2024, Anthony Russo said the original Secret Wars was one of the comics that made him a reader and he hopes to bring some of its magic to the next Avengers capstone.
How It Fits in the MCU: No matter what Doom does in the two Avengers films, we expect the MCU will look fairly different afterward. Oh, and the post-credit scene — if one happens — would be the perfect moment to reprise the X-Men animated series theme again. Also, the original Secret Wars comics introduced Spider-Man’s black suit, so maybe that piece of Venom left in the MCU will make its way to Peter…

Release Date: TBA
What We Know: According to Feige, Armor Wars will be Tony Stark’s “worst fears come to life” as bad actors get a hold of some Iron Man tech. Only Colonel James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) – a.k.a. War Machine – will be in a position to stop them. In August of 2021, Black Monday’s Yassir Lester emerged as the series’ head writer. Production was expected to start in late 2022 and as the program was not mentioned at all during the SDCC 2022 presentation, Lester took to his Instagram stories to clarify that it is still happening. Marvel and Disney subsequently announced the project would be a film instead with Lester staying on to write the script. Little has been said since about, though, so it may be one of the “quiet cuts” Marvel made in the last few years.
How It Fits in the MCU: Cheadle, of course, has played Rhodey since Iron Man 2 and survived terrible color schemes for his armor, the crushing of his legs, being replaced by a Skrull, and the Blip. So he’s well-placed to defend Tony’s technology. Also, we can’t help but think Ironheart will show up to offer him some aid.
Blade (2025)

(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marvel Studios)
Release Date: TBD
What We Know: Feige stunned the 2019 Comic-Con crowd by announcing Mahershala Ali will be the MCU’s version of Blade. Early on, Stacy Osei-Kuffour signed up to write the project with Feige admitting it will be a PG-13 affair. In July of 2021, word broke indicating Bassam Tariq will direct the picture. In November of 2021, Delroy Lindo emerged as the second person cast for the film. Although it was unclear who he might play, the internet quickly seized on the possibility of Jamal Afari, Blade’s mentor in the comics who was revamped into Whistler for the first Blade film trilogy. The following February, Aaron Pierre joined the cast in an unknown role. The departure of Tariq in the Fall of 2022 not only delayed the film, but several others down the production calendar. In late September that year, Lovecraft Country‘s Yann Demange emerged as the new director with Michael Starrbury writing a new script. In April of 2023, Mia Goth joined the cast and, later that month, True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto took on writing duties with production expected to begin in late May 2023. But with the onset of the Writers’ Guild strike on May 2 that year, it was unclear if Pizzolatto’s draft was completed or if production would commence without him. But as the actors eventually went on strike as well, Blade was once again delayed. As the strikes resolved late in the year, Disney pushed the film to a November 2025 release.
And then it all fell apart again with Demange exiting the production sometime in early 2024. The search is on again for a director, and according to reports, the supporting cast have been released from their contracts. Goth has clarified she will remain part of the film. Ali also still intends to star with Eric Pearson writing the latest draft. Additionally, other reports indicate the film was originally meant to be a period piece but will now take place in modern-day MCU.
Curiously, any mention of the film was completely absent from Marvel’s 2024 SDCC presentation (and the subsequent D23 Entertainment Showcase) with Feige only saying “three films” were set for release in 2025. Then, in October, Blade was removed from the 2025 release calendar and replaced by a new Predator movie. Currently, the film is on indefinite hold, although it appears Ali and Goth are still attached to star should the studio ever figure out what it wants to do with Blade. Or, maybe, Wesley Snipes was correct when he said “there will only ever be one Blade” in Deadpool & Wolverine (with all apologies to Sticky Fingaz, who played him in a short-lived TV show, and the various actors who have voiced the Day Walker in animated projects).
As 2024’s D23 Brazil, Feige said the studio is still committed to bringing Blade into the MCU.
How It Fits in the MCU: While the MCU is a realm of science, mysticism, cosmic entities, and traditional street crime, it lacks for genuine monsters. Emerging from Marvel Comics’ The Tomb of Dracula, Blade will no doubt be our guide into a darker corner of the MCU where one finds things that go bump in the night. Luckily, he’s pretty good with a sword and can vanquish them with relative ease. Of course, the literal demons of the Marvel Universe may present more of a challenge. In terms of a more concrete connection to the MCU, the character made a disembodied appearance in Eternals, stopping Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington) from embracing his destiny and, seemingly, adding the character to Blade’s corner of the Marvel Universe.

Release Date: TBA
What We Know: Early in December of 2021, reports suggested director Destin Daniel Cretton will return to helm a Shang-Chi sequel and develop other projects for Disney and Marvel. Presumably, Simu Liu and Awkwafina will return as Shang-Chi and Katy with Meng’er Zhang continuing to rebuild the Ten Rings as Xialing. We also imagine Wong (Bendict Wong) will appear in some capacity, as the signal Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings are sending into space will lead something to Earth. Of course, readers of the Gene Luen Yang-written Shang-Chi comic book may wonder if, perhaps, the Five Weapons Society will also be introduced. In November of 2023, Cretton departed development of the fifth Avengers film to focus on the Shang-Chi sequel, but this clearly changed as Cretton will now direct the next Spider-Man movie (as mentioned above). In July of 2024, Liu even quipped that the sequel keeps getting pushed back as Marvel’s long term plans change. As of that year’s SDCC presentation, it is unclear if the follow-up is still happening. One glimmer of hope: Liu attended Feige’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony the week prior to the convention. However, with Disney announcing 2028 Marvel release dates (listed in the calendar below), it is possible Shang-Chi will be back in three year’s time.
How It Fits in the MCU: The signal broadcasting into space is the big one here. Will it attract a dragon-like alien race to the epicenter of the Blip? Or is it a huge diversion while the Ten Rings organization returns to prominence in the criminal underworld? And speaking of Xialing’s future as a crime boss, she will no doubt face opponents like Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and Kingpin in her quest to be more successful than her late father.
Release Date: TBA
What We Know: In November of 2024, Denzel Washington let slip on an Australia’s Today show that Ryan Coogler was writing a part for him in the third Black Panther movie. Though Marvel initially refused comment on the matter, they eventually confirmed a Black Panther 3 is in development, although in a roundabout way. The confirmation came as long time Marvel executive Nate Moore announced his departure from the studio to produce movies. Marvel bosses Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito specifically mentioned “the next Black Panther” in their statement about his exit. It is still unclear, though, if Coogler is in fact back and writing the new film. Also unknown: if Washington is indeed part of the cast, who might be returning from the previous films, or even any semblance of a plot.
How It Fits in the MCU: Presuming Shuri (Letitia Wright) is still Black Panther and ruling Wakanda, the stories could dovetail with just about any other MCU idea — from the discovery on Adamantium to the continuing tensions between Wakanda and Talocan.
Release Date: TBA
What We Know: Just days after the WGA negotiated a new contract with the AMPTP, word broke indicating Marvel was soliciting pitches from writers for an eventual X-Men feature. Considering the nature of its development, expect the film to occur in Phase 7 — provided Marvel still plans in phases, of course. In May of 2024, Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes writer Michael Lesslie emerged to adapt some of the boundless Mutant concepts into a Marvel Studios script. At present, it is unclear just what sort of roster fans can expect … although, considering the success of X-Men ’97, the early 1990s team might be a safe guess. Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Gambit, Beast, Morph, Jubilee, and Wolverine are a pretty great ensemble and a good cross section of abilities, history, and characters. Toward the end of 2024, Feige said The X-Men is important to the future of Marvel storytelling, but it would likely not debut until after Secret Wars and the conclusion of the current saga. In May of 2025, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier emerged as the likely person to helm the picture.
How It Fits in the MCU: Presuming that the film will be set after Secret Wars, it will either focus on how the X-Men avoided detection all these years or how they join into the mainstream Marvel timeline. Of course, it is always possible they will also set up the next big saga. Our wild speculation? The next overarching story will be “The Apocalypse Saga.” Loosely based on the 1990s “Age of Apocalypse” event storyline, it could see the Mutants (and other heroes) working to prevent the supremacy of Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse) in the future.

Premiere Date: TBA
What We Know: As part of an overall deal with Disney, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will develop and produce several series set in Wakanda or focusing on Wakandan characters. Although, it is now unclear how many of them will come to fruition or if they were all different aspects of Eyes of Wakanda (the in-continuity animated series detailed above). Reports suggest one of the projects is a live action drama set in the Wakandan capital while another may be an Okoye-focues series (more on that below).
How It Fits in the MCU: It all depends on whether or not any of these ideas come to fruition, but we imagine anything set in the present day will follow the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Premiere Date: TBA
What We Know: In late May of 2021, word broke indicating Danai Gurira will lead a Disney+ spinoff detailing Okoye’s rise through the Dora Milaje ranks. This project appears to be an additional Wakanda concept beyond the others Coogler is developing.
How It Fits in the MCU: A focus on Okoye – and the other Dora Milaje for that matter – offers untold possibilities for story and further exploration of Wakanda. It could also strengthen her ties to characters beyond its borders. Of course, if it tells an ongoing story following the events of Wakanda Forever, it could see the character grappling with becoming more of a traditional superhero.
Release Date: TBA
What We Know: During a November 2021 American Cinematheque award ceremony in Scarlett Johansson’s honor, Feige let slip that the Black Widow star will be producing a project for Marvel Studios. Characterizing it as “top secret,” the studio chief also said the production will have nothing to do with Black Widow.
Johansson’s involvement with Marvel is somewhat surprising, as she sued Disney over the Disney+ premiere of Black Widow earlier that year. Although such suits are not uncommon, there seemed to be an unusual level of animosity between Disney and Johansson’s team – in the press, at least. But with the matter resolved, it seems Johansson will still take part in Marvel’s future endeavors. In late June of 2023, Johansson confirmed the project was still in development.
How It Fits in the MCU: Since this is a “top secret” project, anything is on the table – including a film version of A-Force, the all-female Avengers team. Also, although we’re listing this as a movie project, it is also possible this will be a Disney+ series.
Release Date: TBA
What We Know: In March of 2022, Moon Knight‘s Sabir Pirzada was reportedly developing a project based on Marvel Comics’ Nova, centering on a member of the Nova Corps, the yellow-clad space cops seen in Guardians of the Galaxy. At the time of the initial report, it was unclear if Nova would be a film or Disney+ series. In either case, it would follow a human who receives enhanced abilities upon joining the corps. Some subsequent reports indicated the project was evolving into a Marvel Special Presentation like Werewolf by Night. Then things went dormant until late 2024, when new reports claimed the project was back in gear in response to the cross-town rival’s Lanterns HBO series. Criminal Minds‘ Ed Bernero will serve as showrunner, replacing Pirzada. It will also be a live action television series versus something animated, a film, or the rumored one-off special. It will reportedly focus on Richard Rider — the original Marvel character to bear the name “Nova” — as he makes his way to Nova Prime and learns how to be a member of its intergalactic police force.
How It Fits in the MCU: Should it truly become a reality, Nova could take the place of Guardians as the key window into Marvel’s intergalactic happenings.

Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times calls Tom Cruise “the last movie star.” Having written several reviews on his movies over the years and a book titled Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor, she examines Cruise’s impressive filmography, which now includes Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and his immense impact on the film industry. Check out the video below for the full interview.
“When I look back at his career, what I really feel is how much we need someone like him today. Because when Tom Cruise was at his peak, his movies weren’t just making money, he was setting the tone. He was setting the tenor,” Nicholson explains. “He made movies like Rain Man — box office hits. We don’t have that today. Everything is a franchise. Everything is IP. I think why I get so frustrated with his career now is when he’s stuck doing the Mission: Impossible/Top Gun tango, it makes me think that that person can’t exist right now. But I want to believe that I’m wrong. I want to believe that someone can turn this around.”
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is coming to theaters May 22. Reserve your tickets on Fandango today.
