On DVD This Week: Spy, Entourage, Outlander, And More

This week on home video, we’ve got a hit action comedy starring Melissa McCarthy, a big screen adaptation of a popular HBO series, and a couple of worthy indie films, as well as a pair of new releases from the Criterion Collection. Then on TV, we’ve also got the second volume of an acclaimed series’ first season. Read on for the full list:


Spy (2015) 95%

When an arms dealer identifies several of the CIA’s top field agents, desk-bound analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) gets her chance to go undercover in Paris. But during the course of her mission, Cooper must endure a string of indignities, from an unflattering cover story to a borderline-psychotic fellow agent (Jason Statham) who questions her competence at every turn. No details are available on its special features.

Entourage (2015) 32%

Based on the hit HBO series of the same name, Entourage catches up with Vince, E, Turtle, Drama, and Ari, who now runs his own studio. Vince agrees to star in Ari’s next film, but only if he’s allowed to direct it, too, and soon, the production spirals out of control. Bonus features include a making-of doc of the film within the film, interviews with the cast, deleted scenes, and more.

Cop Car (2015) 82%

Kevin Bacon and Shea Whigham star in this Certified Fresh thriller about a pair of teenagers who face dire consequences after taking a police car for a joyride. A making-of doc is included.

The Connection (2014) 77%

Jean Dujardin stars in this crime procedural, inspired by the 1970s “French Connection” drug smuggling scheme, about a French judge looking to bust a drug kingpin. Extras include a making-of featurette and deleted scenes.

Outlander: Season 1 (2014) 91%

After a brief hiatus, the acclaimed Starz fantasy adventure series came back in April to finish off its first season. Volume two of the show, which centers on a WWII nurse who is mysteriously transported back in time to 18th century Scotland, is available this week in a regular Blu-ray or a Collector’s Edition, which includes a wealth of goodies like an extended episode, a table read, pocasts, and more.

A Room With a View (1986) 100%

E.M. Forster’s novel comes alive in this Merchant Ivory Production — the first of their Forster adaptations —  starring Helena Bonham-Carter as a young English woman who struggles to choose between her betrothed (Daniel Day-Lewis) and a free-spirited man she meets while on holiday in Italy. The Criterion Collection is releasing a new edition of the film featuring new interviews with cast and crew and a news segment about Merchant Ivory.

The Honeymoon Killers (1969) 95%

The second offering from Criterion is Leonard Kastle’s 1969 crime docudrama, which focuses on the true story of an overweight woman (Shirley Stoler) who falls in love with an Italian con man (Tony Lo Bianco) and becomes complicit in his crimes. Bonus features include a 2003 interview with Kastle, a video essay, and more.
